Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Davis.
Hi Erica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been a creative spirit with the ability to see not only what I was looking at but also beyond. As a result, I grew up doing my best to find outlets of that expression which were few and far between in 90s Decatur! I danced, cheered, and all the other typical things available to a little girl where I’m from at that time. I enrolled in college pursuing a degree in medicine with a minor in psychology and did well academically as I always had… but I wasn’t fulfilled. I didn’t have the language for that yet but it would come. Meanwhile, throughout this time I was the go-to for all things fashion, hair, makeup, and any type of design for my friends, their parents, my mom’s friends, and teachers. I had talent and I loved making everything and everyone that came into my presence look, feel and be at least a tiny bit better than before they got there. I certainly didn’t have any idea that this could be a viable job, let alone a whole career so I kept it as a little gig I did from time to time when I had time.
Fast forward and I am married with three kids doing the full-time mom thing which I loved and cherished but again.. not fulfilled. I have a passion for children so I met the early childhood education requirements and taught at a school for a time. THEN… I heard about some construction courses that were being offered at Atlanta Tech so I signed up. There I learned all about the process of building, remodeling, zoning, etc. I stuck with it and by the end, was proficient in the construction field. Although I could have gotten my contractor’s license at that time, I did not but I helped in the actual physical construction as well as complete interior layout and design of my current home. The builder loved the changes to his original floor plan so much that he adopted the model and continued to use it successfully in his business. That’s when it clicked! This is a real thing that has a real value attached to it. I can do it. And I did. Thus HomeSweetHomebody Designs was born. I hit the ground running doing projects of varying sizes. Sometimes I did freebies just for word of mouth and experience, other times people found me and honored me by trusting me with their entire homes, companies and lifestyles.
I officially got my degree in Interior Design along the way and continued in what I assumed was my one and only lane. Design. But I’ve always been more than one thing. I began to notice that as an interior designer, even if I created a floorplan, specs, construction documents and the like from my own brain with my own hand, it mattered not because I wasn’t an architect. A client would have to take my renderings to an architectural design firm to have them submitted. Even if the architect did not change a thing he was paid 10-20k for his “expertise”. Again, CLICK. I began the pursuit of my architecture degree. As of now, I have completed all educational requirements and am fulfilling the hands-on component by working in a major metro Atlanta architectural firm as not only the principle interior designer but in an architectural capacity as well! I am now Ms. Design/Build. I design/build residential, I design/build commercial, and I design/built myself.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
This road has not been smooth at all! Most parts weren’t even paved… Along this journey, I have lost both my parents, had children, been married and divorced. I started, stopped, started, stopped. Looked around, went back, cried, prayed, listened, prayed again to make sure I heard right and still stood still! Getting to this point has been an 18 years saga. Even so, I wouldn’t change a thing. This level of success isn’t the end. It’s the beginning.

My Daughters: Laila, Jaide, and Halle… They gave me a reason to keep going before I knew that I was reason enough.
