Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Valentine.
Erika, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My career started when I turned down art scholarship to SCAD to be a hairdresser. I went to Paul Mitchell and shortly after worked as a makeup artist and hairdresser in Hollywood. I was able to build a portfolio and experience behind the scenes of TV shows, photo shoots, and on tour with Kanye West. I relocated to Atlanta where my family was in order to have a more conventional schedule and grow in my hairdressing technique. I was referred to Jamison Shaw by a friend and mentor Scott Cole owner of Paul Mitchell Atlanta. I did my homework and instantly knew that was where I wanted to be. Jsh in unlike any other salon in the south! Education is the foundation of every stylist that calls JSH home. I had the huge privilege of becoming Candy Shaw’s assistant and Mr. Jamison Shaw as well. I learned how to Balayage and French cut. Thanks to my art background I became a natural hair painter and an educator. Sunlights Balayage was created for highlighting and is now sold all over the world. I’m so proud to have been there from the beginning and educating fellow hairdressers in Atlanta and all over the country with our academy. I was given an opportunity to be a part of a family at JSH and have been there for 7 years now. I truly enjoy my career and
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always bumps and struggles along the journey. Every day is different every client is different every hair canvas is different. But when you are passionate, driven and grateful it is always worth it. If you’re not learning from your mistakes and the struggles there’s no growth. If there’s no growth in life then what are we doing besides existing.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jamison Shaw Hairdressers – what should we know?
We have one of the most prestigious salon and academy in the country. We have a Balayage and French cutting academy along with a highlight lightener called Sunlights Balayage. We truly care about sharing our knowledge with other passionate hairdressers.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Drive, passion, talent, willingness to learn, and not giving up. I work really hard in anything I do especially if it’s something I love, believe in and fulfills me. Not to mention surrounding myself with likeminded and talented people. Iron sharpens iron.
