Today we’d like to introduce you to Esteban Patino.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I Was born in Colombia and came to Atlanta 10 years ago, got a studio at the old mattress factory studios (DEFUNCT NOW) and started my career since, have had many different studios, in process of moving to new one at the moment, and have been working with my own system of symbols, a language, to explore how it is perceived, seen, used visually.
Please tell us about your art.
I primarily work with a set of characters I created, initially my aim was trying to create a new language or create certain forms that would give the idea of communication, as in an image, and perhaps through repetition. It has changed a bit since I developed such “language “lately, I’m more interested in the space that this form occupies, perhaps as a sculpture or a tridimensional object. I’m also looking at people’s relation to this character when they become objects, how they can be arranged arbitrarily and how they still manage to project a sense of unity. Still, I’m drawn to the complete image they convey when they’re put together in a “flat” image. The goal is to represent de idea of a written language with a set of arbitrary symbols.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Well, that’s always a very personal question, meaning, every artist works with their own tools, or weapons. There’s something always going on in the world, and in different countries, personally, I prefer art that in a way its outside of time, outside of politics, not that those issues don’t interest me, quite the opposite. But there are other universal and constant ways and histories that are quite deeply rooted in our humanity, …. language, shape, mystery…. that’s where my interest is at.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Currently some of my “heaps of language “are located inside the Learning center at High Museum of Art, Atlanta.
