Today we’d like to introduce you to Fulterius King.
Fulterius , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in a very small town where my mother taught me to treat people the way I want to be treated and my father encouraged me to be a leader, and not a follower. Both of their lessons have truly stuck with me. They have inspired my poetry, pushing me to give voice to the voiceless and to lead boldly in my creative expression. Since I was a little boy, I have always dreamed of being an author. My love for poetry began at a young age, sparked by a peer who recited a Maya Angelou poem during a Black History program in elementary school. I was captivated by how words could hold an audience’s attention. I attempted to write a book in 7th grade, making significant progress but ultimately never finishing it. Writing has always served as a therapeutic outlet for me. In high school, I penned my first poem that I was actually proud of, and continued journaling throughout college. One of the best parts of journaling for me is the ability to revisit my entries years later and witness my evolution over the years. My journey of self-discovery truly began after I left home at 18 years-old to embrace the challenges and freedoms of college life. Writing and journaling helped me understand myself better and navigate my growth into adulthood. I began to realize that my journal entries were transforming into poetry, deepening my love for the craft. Today, I consider myself to be a man rich in God, soul, art, history, curiosity and emotional awareness. I am profoundly grateful to poetry for the beautiful way it dares me to weave these elements into my life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Surely, it has not been a smooth road. Growing up in a small town, I never saw an exact example of the man I desired to be. I realized early on that I had to become that man. I had to prioritize mental health and wellness as a Black man and embrace creative expression—something I didn’t see much of while growing up. To quote Emily Dickinson, “I went out with lanterns looking for myself.” This journey has been filled with challenges, but it has also been a path of profound self-discovery.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the author of A Book of Poems for Black Kings, which was released on February 3, 2025, and has hit Amazon’s Bestseller list! As a Licensed Professional Counselor currently working at a private practice in Atlanta, I enjoy being at the intersection of poetry and mental health. My poems aim to soothe the mind.
I am very proud of my book, A Book of Poems for Black Kings. I am grateful for the feedback I’ve received from readers around the world on how the book has transformed their lives. I wrote it to empower Black men and Black boys, validate their lived experiences, and facilitate their journeys of self-acceptance and self-discovery—an experience I have embraced in my own life.
As a mental health therapist, I have had the privilege of working with numerous Black men and boys from various walks of life. I cherish the opportunity to empower them. I hope this book continues to uplift and inspire those I have not yet reached, and I look forward to furthering this mission in the future.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have had some really amazing mentors so far in my life. My advice is to not be afraid to reach out to individuals who you may think are “out of your reach.” Remember, everyone once started as a mentee. I would also advise you to maintain humility—not modesty, but true humility. You are likely to find a good mentor if they also take pride in their humility.
When it comes to networking, it’s essential to know your strengths. Additionally, mastering the art of being teachable is crucial. Embrace every opportunity to learn, and don’t hesitate to seek mentorship from those who inspire you. You might be surprised at how willing they are to help.
