Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Currin.
Nathan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started working in the graphic design industry right out of high school… Decided I wanted to major in commercial art/graphic design in college, and so went off to a small Florida school to do that. One thing led to another, and after a year I wound up back here in Gainesville, exploring the Web side of things, which was just beginning to take off.
I was hired to help build an online News portal for North Georgia and worked for AccessNorthGA.com for a couple of years. In 2000 I left Access to help out on the ground floor of now one of the largest interactive marketing agencies in the Atlanta area: Red Clay Interactive, where I would ultimately become Art Director/Creative Manager for several years. In the meantime, I finished up my BA in Business (Marketing), which was extremely useful. Then in 2007 I left the “corporate creative” world to explore freelance work for myself, which I had been itching to do. And immediately I fell in love with setting my own schedule, working with clients of my choosing, etc.
And so for 9 years now, I’ve been working as a solo/freelance creative director/designer to help businesses not just in Atlanta, but all over the country with their websites, print work, branding, and more!
Has it been a smooth road?
Not always… It certainly has had it’s ups and downs. Some of the biggest issues have obviously been with the money side of things and going through the recession/trying to find clients during economically challenging times. But I’ve persevered through all of that, and the struggles have taught me valuable lessons on marketing, savings, sales, and more!
Who, or what, deserves a lot of credit for where you are today?
The team at Red Clay Interactive played a key role in my development and learning. I was there for several years in a couple of different roles, and my work with them was fantastic and the mentorship from the leaders around me was invaluable.
What kind of work do you look forward to most?
I really enjoy working with start-ups… whether it be branding, print collateral or a mobile-responsive website. I truly value clients that know what they want but leave the creativity up to me and trust my judgment when it comes to what truly will work best.
