Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrick Neko Wilson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As the grandson of the legendary reggae singer and songwriter Stanley Beckford, I always knew I was destined for greatness. At the age of ten, my family and I moved to the east side of Atlanta on Glenwood Road. As a pre-teen, I was very active in sports but it was not until I started playing drums when I discovered my true talent and passion was music. In 2006, I started exploring music further by making beats, recording songs and creating music with a local group. After graduating from Clarkston High School, I accepted a music scholarship to attend South Carolina State University. While attending SCSU, I was in the marching band and led the percussion section for three years.
During my college career, I released 16 mix-tapes and E.P’s (extended plays). But 12 of mix-tapes was during a span of 12 months all while being a full-time student. It was not until my junior year when I started audio engineering to fully support myself. After graduating from college with a music degree in Music Industry, I was hired as an audio mixing and recording engineer at one of the top recording studios in Atlanta. After half a decade of experience, I became the senior recording and mixing engineer working with numerous celebrity clients. I then realized it was time to finally start my business and put my knowledge I have gained over the years to work for me. After a year’s worth of construction, New Wave Studios ATL is now open for business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not! There were tremendous struggles I endured along the way to opening New Wave Studios ATL. Some of the challenges I overcame was legitimizing the business structure with the state of Georgia, locating a safe environment that will also suit our constructional needs as well as finding trustworthy contractors. After going through a struggle with contractors I decided to finish the build out myself. I learned a lot about studio design in school but I wasn’t experienced in actually building anything so I took my time to make sure that I did it right. It was a slow process and at times very hard to manage because I was spending money to build and keep the space but I wasn’t making any income from the studio.
