Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Colley.
Gary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up a preacher’s kid so suits have been a part of my life since birth! I’ve always enjoyed throwing a suit on & the feeling that comes with it so it was natural for me. My start in fashion was a little different, I knew how to style a suit with various combinations but I had zero business knowledge in menswear retail so I went to the local Men’s Wearhouse in my hometown, Albany, GA & obtained an entry-level position. I went from that entry-level position to store manager in just three months. I didn’t do it alone though, with the help of master tailor Canda Price I also learned how to do suit alterations. That skill really put me ahead of the game because I could run store operations, sell, and sew. That experience in Albany landed me a manager’s position here in Atlanta at Bachrach (Lenox) and then Saks 5th. After Saks, I started working sales for a healthcare company while still doing custom suits on the side and I was able to connect with Mohamed Sanu of the Falcons. I stepped out on faith and made him a suit just looking for some promotion and he loved it! He liked it so much that he wanted me to create all his looks for the 18-19 season which had me excited. I went home, prayed, and the VERY next day when I got to work, I was let go. I don’t know if it was God’s work or coincidence but I’ve been captain of my own ship since that day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been smooth at all! There are a lot of growing pains that come with being an entrepreneur, especially a newbie. One of my big problems, in the beginning, was finding a great tailor who could produce a quality product. I probably went through at least ten different tailors trying to find someone I could trust.
Munir Bespoke – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I provide custom suits and shirts for the man who has trouble finding that perfect size off-the-rack or that person who wants a 1 of 1 that you can’t find anywhere else. I am most proud of my company being able to show men that suits aren’t just for interviews & weddings but more of an everyday lifestyle. That’s my ultimate goal as a company; build an everyday lifestyle brand.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success as being able to elevate the people around me and leave an imprint on this world. A legacy that will stand long after we’ve left this earth for our kids, grandkids, and on.
