Today we’d like to introduce you to Gavin Henry.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My story is a little interesting. How I look at life is different than most. Originally I am Brooklyn, New York native with strong Jamaican blood. I was raised by just my mom and older sister. Due to my roots, I have done a lot of traveling in my life. I moved to Jamaica as a child to live with my grandmother and started my education real young there. After eight months I moved back to Brooklyn then we soon moved to Maryland. I am not one to focus on the negative or act like I love the “struggle.”We didn’t have everything, but I appreciated what did. Growing up I did everything a kid could do. Specifically, I would play basketball, ride bikes, roller skate, karate, and skateboard. In October of 2003, I arrived in Georgia. We moved to Union City, Georgia in South Fulton County. I refer to it as the outskirts of the south side. As a senior in high school I always knew I was going to leave home and go off to college. That was just the plan didn’t matter where I figured I can be anywhere. I applied to Columbus State University and got accepted. I had all my housing done by April. My journey at Columbus State University has been an uphill battle that has brought on so many blessings. I have transferred in and out on multiple occasions. One time I was blessed enough to go and get my Associate Degree in General Studies. I received this degree from the Columbus campus of Georgia Military College. Initially being a political science major I learned that wasn’t for me. I dived head first into the communication department. Concentrating in Public Relations. My love for public relations stems from having to wear so many hats. A PR professional must be a one-stop shop, and that’s what I appreciate most about it. Being a part of this major, I gained experience with radio and video production of course. Helping a friend with a class project put me in front of my first microphone. We recorded maybe six episodes. I agreed to be a co-host on her radio show for a project. Four years later the opportunity to create my own podcast presented itself, and I jumped. I have been in tune to podcasting for years. Became a real media head in a sense. At this point in my life, I felt I going through a dark time. Consistently being up against a wall. That I built. Constantly going in circles. Having goals with no real work ethic. I decided to join D30 Radio which is the hottest and trendiest internet radio station! My goal was to get my public speaking chops up. I knew I had to create my voice and brand. Then “Shop Talk With Gavo” was born. My whole life has changed along this journey. What I have created is much more than I could’ve imagined. My purpose is more vivid as the days continue.
Please tell us about your art.
I present my art in a number of ways. I am a podcaster. I use my voice to connect with people. The name of my show is “Shop Talk With Gavo.” I want to put you in the barbershop and hair salon sense of thinking so you know it’s open to all. Also, you know once you enter into these places there is no idea what you may discuss! That is Shop Talk With Gavo. I am the shop essentially. I created an imaginary shop for those listening and watching to feel as though we are together. It is a one-stop shop for the creative, entrepreneur, business owner, singer, rapper, community group, etc. This is the place where the only mission is to put people up on the game. That is who I am. I am the guy that will always seek and drop knowledge. Just know that this is a very fun and open space that is business oriented. There is an episode for everyone! That is an undeniable fact!
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success period is in the eye of the beholder. My idea of success in the grand sense is having everything I need. From building a family to having a roof over my head. Connecting with the people, and also having everything I need. I am a man of the people always. My topics range so wide just for this reason. Everything is not for everybody. I know everything I want simply is not for me. Being happy equates to success for me also. There is no true success without being in a good space.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People are able to support my work by simply giving me a chance and touching the play button. Every episode is not for everyone, but there is one for you! Plus many more for you to come. My podcast is now on three different major platforms. These platforms are iTunes, Spreaker Studio, and Spotify. If any iPhone user types “Shop Talk With Gavo” in there search bar it will come up. You can also do the same with a simple google search. Every option available to listen and watch will be visible.
