Today we’d like to introduce you to Gee Tana.
Gee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had the love for the beauty industry. I worked for Lancôme for two years at Belk. Here is where my passion for cosmetics blossomed. I loved enhancing women’s beauty and showing them how to use products. Not only did I have the love for makeup, I ran an online boutique “unrivaled couture” I overall just loved transforming women. I would eventually leave the department store and put my all in being a freelance artist. I started simply by posting on social media and posting on every platform available to build my clientele.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not, obstacles mua face are slow seasons. Fall and winter are more prone to less work plus I am a mother of four, so working around my children’s schedule is quite tough. There would be weeks with no bookings but I would always have to stay self-educated, staying on top of trends, using myself as a model when I have no clients and working on posting fresh content. With the current pandemic has made things quite rough especially since makeup is a hands-on thing and we have social distancing in place, but things will get better.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
Makeup Mastery is about transforming the typical women into her best self. I specialize in Full face bold looks, but I also can accomplish very subtle glam for my ladies who like to stay on the more natural side. I am most proud of the amount of clientele I have gained being in Atlanta less than a year. I am the everyday mother with big dreams. I not only specialize in makeup in the suite I am a traveling artist. I work with everyone. Male/female any ethnicity. I will work with one person or a wedding party of 20. I have done projects as large reality TV but also as small as dance competitions for teenagers. Whatever the event. I’m the mua for it.
What were you like growing up?
I was born in Miami, Florida. My mom would move around a lot, a trait that I would unknowingly pick up. We moved to Georgia when I was ten years old. I have lived in four different states, numerous cities. I always was inspired by successful people. No matter how they got it. I always wanted to chase my dreams. I would start by my selling clothes out of my trunk while living in a small town that literally only had four traffic lights Metter, GA. That small town made me who I was. I would become a mom at 14 and have two kids before I graduated from high school. Another soon after completing. I always knew I wanted to move from that town. I didn’t want to fall victim to the small-town mentality. I started voicing my dreams and people would speak down on them and that’s when I knew I was bigger than my circumstances. I never let what they said deter me. My biggest interest were traveling and looking good. I would constantly be on go.
