Meet George Bass of The Mesa Consulting Group in Acworth

Today we’d like to introduce you to George Bass.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After graduate school, I got my dream job working for a company that mirrored the Jerry Maguire lifestyle. My wife told me that I had prioritized work over our family so I quit and started a visitor’s guide to Atlanta which gave me a substantially higher quality of life but never the financial remuneration I had earned previously. Still, the company grew and I wanted to expand. Kennesaw State University was in my back yard so when I went to look at hiring students I learned that they needed faculty and I realized I could see prospective employees over an entire semester as opposed to just a one hour interview so I started teaching what I knew which was sales, marketing, sales management and direct marketing for both the undergrads and the Executive MBA program. Perhaps because we were growing and expanding across the country, I was surprised when the University asked me to speak with a company who had solicited them for help regarding issues they were having. I helped out and found that what they paid was substantially more than I earned running my corporation and still allowed me a high quality of life. I received additional referrals from KSU and then started to solicit this business on my own. In 2016 the numbers were so skewed in favor of the consulting business that I closed down the visitor’s guides and have been running The Mesa Consulting Group ever since. While Mesa means table in Spanish and our tag-line is “We bring experience to the table” it’s actually an acronym for my children’s names.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
While building the visitor’s guide wasn’t easy because it was the first company I had ever started and I didn’t have anything from which to build, starting Mesa was very easy. It didn’t hurt that I had business handed to me before I had ever incorporated and that after I had become an official business entity I was receiving referrals from a major university where I taught the subject matter on which I consulted. Even the growth has been easy because I’m surrounded by high level PhD’s, top flight sales managers and experts in sales who I can employ both part and full time.

Please tell us about The Mesa Consulting Group.
Mesa Consulting helps companies with all aspects of sales and marketing. What we do is learn about a company’s issues and then see how we can solve them. What I am most proud of is the accomplishments I see my clients experience from our working with them and knowing that we made a difference in their professional lives. But even more so, is knowing that by helping them help their clients, we insure their financial solvency and that means their employees never have to worry about money so they can be the best people they can be outside of their work environment. And that makes me feel like we made a difference.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had it to all over again, I would have started Mesa sooner.
