Meet Gerald Barclay of Gee-Bee Productions in Lawrenceville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerald Barclay.

Gerald K. Barclay, professionally known as Gee-Bee, is a director, producer, author, cinematographer, and editor. His story begins after fleeing the devastating civil war in his native Liberia. He settled in New York City and graduated with a Communications degree from the City University of New York. He gained early filmmaking experience on Abel Ferrara’s “King Of New York”, Spike Lee’s “Jungle Fever” before enrolling into a mentorship under Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Tony Lover at Liberty Studios.

He then formed his own production company Gee-Bee Productions and went on to helmed hundreds of music videos for artists such as Wu-Tang Clan, Master P., Snoop Dogg, Bounty Killa, Mystikal, Pig Pun, Ill & Al Skratch and The Gap Band. Always one to reinvent himself, he sought new challenges, his first feature film, BLOODY STREETZ, a gritty urban thriller won critical praise and a Vision Award at the 2002 Pan African Film Festival and was released through Artisan Home Entertainment.

In 2001, Gee-Bee returned to his African roots and produced & directed a visionary and critically acclaimed feature-length documentary, “LIBERIA: THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE”, A touching and powerfully emotional documentary on the tragic aftermath of the Liberian civil war. Next was “Wu: The Story of the Wu-tang Clan”, a thirteen-year intimate portrayal of the Wu-Tang Clan chronicling the rise and fall of one of hip-hop’s most notorious groups which was released through the BET Networks and Paramount Pictures.

His more recent works include Fatima’s Revenge and the Award Winning short; “The Bully” as well as “Liberia Will Rise”, the sequel to “The Love of Liberty”, which chronicles the Liberian Ebola crisis.” Gerald has also released his first memoir entitled “Shooting The Clan: An Eyewitness to the Rise of The Wu-Tang Clan”. We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I can describe my journey by the phrase: Feast or Famine. The music video scene in the nineties was great, with budgets reaching in the hundreds of thousands. Sadly, the shift in technology and the availability of cheaper equipment has created a lot of competition from emerging filmmakers who often are willing to shoot music video clips for $200 or less. This forced many older filmmakers to find work in other areas. I have a passion for film and video production and continue to create new projects.

We’d love to hear more about your company.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Staten Island, NY and had a fascination with movies and camera. I purchased my first camera in 1989 and spent countless hours videotaping everything I could in the early nineties. This paid off when many of those clips have been licensed as archival clips for well know documentaries.
