Meet Gerald E. Burch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerald E. Burch.

Gerald E. Burch

Hi Gerald E., we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from Albany State College in 1980 with a BA degree in Art, but I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. I was professionally selling my artwork as far back as 1977.

I got married in 1980 and moved to Atlanta in 1991. That’s when I started entering art competitions, showing my art in different artistic venues, and winning prizes and awards.

During the period of 2001 thru 2007, I taught art in places; including Guest Art Instructor at Brenau University in Gainesville, The Gwinnett County Continuing Education Program, and Private Art Instruction.

Since those early days, I have also become a published author of four books of poetry, one Christian Children’s Book, and one full-length novel. I have been Blessed to have my works celebrated and collected over the past 15 years by some notable collectors and some not-so-well-known collectors. But all in all, my works speak to those whom it speaks to.

I am a storyteller. So my literary artworks as well as my visual artworks, tell stories. I try to say as much as possible about the condition our condition is in, in as many ways as the different mediums will allow.

My artworks are snapshots of what I feel about what I feel.

My three-dimensional mixed medium compositions are what I’m recognized for, more than any other feature of my artworks as a whole.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Unfortunately, because of some bad decisions concerning legal matters, I haven’t been able to take advantage of certain employment opportunities that would’ve been beneficial to my forward progress.

So needless to say, I made my own road hard. But by The “Grace of GOD”, there were several art opportunities and people that crossed my path that offered recognition and support to any of my talents.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist! I compose literary as well as visual artworks. But I’m known foremost for my mixed medium visual art creations. I am also a sculptor.

It’s hard to artistically pinpoint what I do, for I create using whatever materials I can put my hands on that will enable me to tell whatever story I’m attempting to convey.

What I’m most proud of is that the people who acquire my artwork truly love and understand that piece of artwork. They, to a certain extent, feel what I feel and see what I see, and hear what I hear.

What sets me apart? Hmmmm… I don’t know if I’m actually set apart from anyone or anything. I’m just an average everyman that GOD has let feel in living color. I’m just an artist!

GOD does the paintings; HE just lets me hold the brush!!

My three-dimensional mixed medium compositions are what I’m recognized for more than any other feature of my artwork as a whole.

How do you define success?
Having my artworks, be they visual or literary, impact people!

Having my compositions cause people to contemplate our relationship with ourselves and our planet.

Success in my eyes, is having my artworks compel people to think about our human condition……our past, our present, and our future.
