Meet Ghetty Hilaire of Earth’s Poetry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ghetty Hilaire.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well… Earth’s Poetry is made up of two founders: Me (Ghetty) and my better half/partner in life and business (Mackendy). I didn’t intend on Earth’s Poetry becoming an actual business. I actually wanted to find a way to get rid of some vessels that I acquired last year but was never able to sell them. So, in hopes to make space in my garage, I decided that I should make candles and sell them at local markets. We purchased a candle-making kit and realized that making candles was pretty cool, but the curing time would make business dreadfully slow. So, I started looking up other products that I could add to catch customer’s eyes. Before I realized it, Mackendy and I had started putting together a business plan. We have turned our home into a chemistry lab, and it has been so fun curating these products.

From the beginning, we wanted to make sure that our products were natural. We are both of Haitian descendance, and we wanted to use ingredients that represent our culture, which is well known for using plants for remedies, skincare, and home decor. Even the emblem of our company is a flower. It is the Lily of the Valley, which is a flower that thrives nocturnally. It best represents our company because we founded Earth’s Poetry during a time where I was recovering from an accident injury… where some people would have thought we may not have been able to survive. But just like the Lily of the Valley, we not only survived the night… WE. THRIVED!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Hah! I don’t think smooth roads exist for small business owners, especially newbies like ourselves. Big companies, like Bath and Body Works, have hundreds of employees divided into departments to work on marketing, accounting, product development, product design, etc. As of today, Earth’s Poetry is run by a 2-person team that manages all of those things and try to maintain a work-life balance simultaneously. Our biggest struggle is marketing. Since most of our energy goes to creating our products and selling them at pop up events, we often forget to do marketing for our online website. I hope in the near future we can add someone knowledgeable in marketing to the team to help us do better in that category. Despite the frustrations of this entire experience of building this company, I have never felt more fulfilled in my life.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Earth’s Poetry?
Earth’s Poetry is a luxury skincare and home goods company. We specialize in creating naturally based products using sustainable, cruelty-free, and ethically sourced ingredients. Earth’s Poetry stands out from the competition because we make the conscious decision to refrain from using any mica powder in our products in an effort to not encourage child labor in mica mines around the world. Instead, all of the colors and glitter in our products are made with plant-based ingredients, like eucalyptus plants and turmeric powder. We put in the effort to source the very best ingredients that are free of formaldehyde by-products, parabens, and phthalates. It is our daily goal to practice eco-friendly techniques in manufacturing, packaging, and day-to-day activity. And last but not least, we want our customers to enjoy purchasing our luxury products at an affordable price. Luxury doesn’t have to be for the rich and famous anymore.

What’s next?
In the near future, we are looking to hire interns and a marketing team to help expand our business online. Earth’s Poetry deserves to be shared with the world, and I know that social media and the internet will help us get there. In the fall/winter, we will be releasing our newest line just in time for the holidays… but it’s a secret so I can’t tell you much more than that! I can’t wait to introduce it to everyone!

We have another goal, but we may not be able to execute it for several more years. We want to use our brand to create jobs in Haiti, where we will hire local farmers to grow some of the ingredients we need for our products. Haiti is such a beautiful country… rich in culture, love, and life. We want to give back to our motherland by giving the people an opportunity to make a living wage that can actually take care of their families and eventually help the Haitian economy bounce back to where it was 50 years ago.
