Today we’d like to introduce you to Giovanni “KrossJayy” Esquivel.
Hi Giovanni “KrossJayy”, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In high school, a friend of mine started to make music and I asked him where he would record at and he told me about a studio not too far from our school. I remember booking my first session in the studio and I just fell in love with it. I knew that’s what I wanted to do forever. A fun fact is actually wanted to be a rapper/singer but I ended up liking the production and the behind the scenes work a lot better so I started making beats and things just took off from there.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been easy, I feel like I don’t fit in with a lot of people in my city so just building bonds around me has always been hard, and a lot of times I’m in my head feeling like I’m not doing enough and I could go harder. Something I struggled with very early in my career was comparing myself to others, I would see other producer’s success and I would ask myself “why can’t that me?” but over time I matured and realized there’s a process for everything they didn’t get there overnight. Now when I see somebody in a much high level than me I admire them and I look at them like motivation that anything is possible if you put in the work.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a music producer that I would say is known for my versatilely, I love all kinds of music, there is at least one song in every genre that I listen to on a daily basis and I feel like that has really helped me get the upper hand when trying to create something new. Something I’m proud of is the fact I didn’t quit, I feel like there was plenty of times I could’ve gave up because something didn’t go my way but I just kept going because I wanted to see what’s at the finish line, I wanted to be one of the few successful ones.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love about Chicago is the culture, it’s a huge melting pot of all kinds of people its impossible to get bored there is something always going on. The one thing I do hate though is the potholes they are your worst enemy you always got to keep an eye on them.
