Meet Glenn Golden of Jailhouse Brewing Company in South

Today we’d like to introduce you to Glenn Golden.

Jailhouse began, as most breweries do, as a backyard hobby. Glenn and Melissa Golden founded the brewery in late 2009 after renovating an old jail in the city of Hampton, GA. Hampton is where Glenn grew up and has lived the majority of his life. As one of only four production breweries in the state, we spent our early years cultivating a local following that holds strong to this day. We’ve always intended to be a Georgia only brewery and continue growing in that vein. Jailhouse brews beers inspired by the many influences around us and always looks to tell a brand story with each beer. Our smaller 15 barrel brewhouse is located in approximately 1,300 sq ft of production space where we make the most of what we have. Our outdoor taproom is a great place to meet with friends as well as make new ones. Look for an indoor taproom/event space sometime in early 2019, where we’ll have a variety of entertainment and activities.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If the road is smooth, then you’re not pushing the boundaries. We are a bootstrapped business that has to work extra hard to make the most of everything. With that comes efficiencies and benefits but also struggles along the way. It’s tougher for a smaller brewery to compete among the better-funded breweries. Especially when you look at distribution. Our drive is to create demand for the product by brewing a beer that people love and seek out. If there is demand, the rest will follow.

Jailhouse Brewing Company – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Jailhouse specializes in connecting with our community and providing a common factor that brings people together. We love brewing beer and telling a brand story with our products. We specialize in the beer we’re brewing today and how are we going to make it the best possible beer we can. We specialize in sharing that beer with our patrons and enjoying the community and camaraderie that comes with it. These are the things I am most proud of as a company owner. Our M.O. is, If you believe in the little man, small towns and big flavor than you’re one of us. If that appeals to you, then let’s have some beer together.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Awards are great and we’ve received our share. They honor what we do and show recognition for our hard work, but my proudest moment would be that first batch of beer that was brewed on October 23rd, 2009. It represented so much to come and was the apogee of a lot of hard work and perseverance. I’m proud of many things here at Jailhouse. It teaches me something new every day which means there is always more to learn.
