Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Cox.
Greg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was introduced to music at an early age by my parents. My father, a gospel singer, Johnavon “Bo Peep” Sauls and Mother Angela Cox, a singer & minister. I began to curate my own material from a young age with elements of R&B/, Soul, and Hip Hop. Being inspired by Pharrell Williams, Kanye West and Timbaland. After spending most of my life up until age 14 in the primary care of my mom, I desired to spend time with my dad. My father took me to his church, which changed my musical journey forever. I connected with six young musicians who were arguably the best on the east coast at the time. For the next five years, we became inseparable and that precious time expanded my vocabulary in music.
Although submerged deep in the gospel roots, my music continually reflected the soulful honesty and positive energy that was deep down in my heart. In 2009, I was featured as a keyboardist on MTV’s hit show ‘Making The Band’ with Diddy I made it to LA and stayed until the classical challenge were I was eliminated. Following the show, I released my first EP, “The Last Start,” in 2012. I connected with Music Artist KJ Scriven, who then became my best friend and changed my life! He taught me a lot about life and music songwriting. He moved to Charlotte, so I followed. I continued to grow an online presence since then, I branched out as a performing artist. I moved to Charlotte, starting hosting shows and released my first album, “ETC.” Christian rapper Da Truth reached out and I produced his EP with KJ Scriven “VET.” Truth took the album to Kirk Franklin, which afforded me the opportunity to sing on Kirk Franklin’s album “Long Live Love” on a song named “Strong God,” which gave me my first Grammy Award.
Has it been a smooth road?
Honestly, the road to this current point seemed fruitless for a while. In hindsight, I saw how each year of my life had shaped me to be exactly who I am right now. I believe everything is connected to exactly who and what you’re supposed to become. Not in the exterior journey sense like career, notoriety, or financial status. The inner journey, the “Voyage,” we all will take the rest of our lives, it involves the shaping of my soul. While developing the career, reputation, and notoriety, there’s a journey & connection happening inwardly. I subconsciously felt it, listened to it at times and sometimes not so much, which caused delays, detours, and consequences that were completely avoidable. Even in those pitfalls, I’ve learned they gave me a priceless lesson that turned into wisdom that I know practice and teach daily.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a music artist, producer, & creative director for my record label alongside my business manager & brand strategist Sara Coleé for “The Garden.” I produce, record, and perform original songs created in my recording studio to people all over the world. I’m most proud that I’ve continued to remain focused, consistent, and positive through all my adversity. Also winning a Grammy Award with Kirk Franklin on his last project, “Long Live Love.”
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the music industry creating proprietary channels of content controlled by the artist in the subscription-based model for music, concerts, VIP experiences, even exclusive online content. I see larger record-setting attendance concerts simultaneously held online and live in person. This online shift, as well as in-person capitalistic thinking, will change how we do it all.
