Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Rashton.
Gregory, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up singing in my grandparents’ church around 5 or 6. I come from a musical family of singers and musicians. At the age of 12 I started writing poetry. As I got older I joined many choirs and singing groups. One day last year I decided to start my journey as a artist. I had my first performance as a solo artist January 1st of this year and it gave me confirmation that I should keep going. Shoutout to King Yoshi Man for that opportunity.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can definitely say it hasn’t been an easy road. Between working full time, being a new husband to my beautiful wife, and focusing on my craft it has been overwhelming at times. Trying to make sure finances are in order while pursuing my dream. Also, making sure I give my time that my wife needs with me. I know for us me being booked multiple days during the week can be straining on our relationship. With me doing the type of music I do, it’s hard being accepted but I’ve learned that my message in my music may not be for everyone but it can change someone’s life so that’s more important. Making an impact and a difference with my gift that God has blessed me with is my focus but I tend to lose sight of that. I tend to get caught up in the likes and views on my content.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
What I do is music, poetry, and acting. My music speaks of faith, love, and peace. My music is made to inspire and uplift others. In the 7th grade, I was introduced to The Harlem Renaissance which inspired me to do poetry. I self-published a collection of poems titled The Light Speaks Life in 2013. I was apart of a Christian spoken word group called Power of Word. I’ve been apart of a few productions in 2012 and 2013. Currently working on my debut album Therapy and 2nd poetry book titled, The Light Speaks Life Too. What makes me different is that I incorporate singing, rapping, and poetry into my art while rocking a stylish bow tie.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the characteristics like self discipline, drive, confidence, passion, and integrity are essential to success. Drive keeps you focused on your goals and not being comfortable with the level you are at in the present time. Without confidence how can someone believe in your art? Without passion it’s just work. With passion it’s something you truly love. You give more effort in your passion. Integrity and staying true to who you are is what makes you stand out beyond industry robots.
