Meet Gustavo Vega of All Star Painting in Athens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gustavo Vega.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got my company started in 2013 in Athens Georgia. I got the idea while I was staying in a halfway house in Atlanta off of the interstate 85 where I was trying to get sober. This halfway house had started a turnkey business and we would go out and paint apartments in Doraville Chamblee and more or less round the Claremont area.

I was promoted to crew leader and while there I would teach men that didn’t have any skilled trades how to become painters I would start them on an entry level positions. I would first start teaching did man how to properly prepped an apartment after several weeks of learning how to properly prop I would show them how to start painting first and show them how to cut and with my brush them out teach him how to use rollers I will teach him how to spray interior and exterior. After several months of working with these man and watching their spirits rise as of one stay were broken man and now they were man with a skilled trade and more and left it the after several months of working with these man and watching their spirits rise as of one stay were broken man and now they were man with a skilled tradesmen. I graduated that program came back to Athens with that dream of starting a paint company I didn’t have any money just a Few hand tools and some drop cloths I didn’t have my driver’s license quite yet because I had lost it to a result of a Dui in 2012..But that didn’t stop my dream I would find people with vehicles and take them out to work with me I would get the contracts and we would work on people’s homes I gathered up enough money to get my first company vehicle and I hired a driver to pick us up and drop us off at the jobs. I want to get my driver’s license back in 2014 and All Star painting was in full swing. I started saving everything that I would make and I would buy more tools I started buying some more ladders I bought some more sprayers and I bought some more hand tools I made a lot of sacrifices and then spend my money foolishly and I got my second company vehicle and I started having really good contracts here in Athens Georgia with the historic district doing home restoration work. Going into my fifth year of business I have still kept the same dream I’m still helping men in halfway houses some of them are skilled painters and some of them or not but I still give them an opportunity to learn something new and with that that has helped me in my fifth year of sobriety. Financially am I not be where I want to be but I’ve been given a life that I’ve never even dreamed of as a direct result of helping others

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been all smooth with the new business I’ve made a lot of mistakes and trying to learn how to become a business owner I realize the difference of being a business owner with the paint company not a painter would a business two completely different things
