Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalissa Marshall.
Jalissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was about twelve years old, I began to notice the passion I had for hair, especially when all I wanted to do was sit in the house and style my Barbies dolls hair. Growing up, I use to watch my aunt braid so many family member’s hair. She wasn’t a licensed cosmetologist, but she definitely had skills when it came to braiding hair. So by me watching her, it influences me to start braiding my own hair and even my sibling’s hair as well. I had become so good at braiding, that I built my clientele within my hometown and Columbus, Ga area.
So once I got to high school in 2004, I notice most of the girls were starting to wear sew-ins and that’s when I started watching videos on YouTube on sew-ins, curls, cutting, and different hair brands. Once I graduate from High School in 2007, I moved to Columbus, GA to attend college which at the time, I honestly didn’t have any idea as to what I wanted to do. In 2008, I decided since I enjoy doing hair that I should go to school full-time to get my cosmetology license. After I enroll in Rivertown Beauty School, I notice that they only taught you the basics of hair and I was ok with that because it’s a lot I had already taught myself. In 2009 I graduated from beauty school and went on to take my state board exam which I passed on the first try and was officially licensed by the state as a hairstylist.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s definitely hasn’t been a smooth road at all. Once I got my cosmetology license I honestly wasn’t happy with even doing hair anymore. I felt like that wasn’t good enough nor did I have the same passion for it as I did when I was twelve. I didn’t have any type of support or any type of connects and what made it worst, I felt like I wasn’t good at doing hair. The struggles were hard to overcome do too me not believing in myself and giving up every chance I got. However, just when I thought it was all over and I was done with anything that had to do with hair I got an unexpected life-changing opportunity. In 2013 I got the opportunity to work in a professional hair salon that was based out of Atlanta but was coming to Columbus, Ga called walk-in weaves owned by Atlanta native Maja sly. That salon is where I learned the good and bad about running a business and where I met some of the most loyal clients to this day. I love you guys!!!!!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is for your everyday ladies who not only want to feel good but who also want to look good as well. It definitely warms my heart to know I’m giving a little more confident to my clients once they see themselves in the mirror after getting their hair done. One thing my clients will tell you about me is that I’m very professional with them and that I never booked any appointments and not showed up. I specialize in mostly weaves which would be sew-ins and quick weaves are what I’m best known for. Also, I’m hoping to be known for having a one of a kind hairline that will be dropping soon! Honestly, I can say what set me apart is that I offer styles at a very reasonable price where I still make a profit and my clients don’t have to break the bank to look good. It’s simple, but it’s not always easy finding a stylist that does amazing work with great prices.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success as goals you successfully to accomplish on a daily; whether it’s small or big. As long as you took the time and the steps to achieve those goals that will help with your brand or your business…you have succeeded. If you are working hard to bring your dreams to light every day no matter how hard things might get, then to me that is a success.
My criteria really are to be successful by setting goals on a daily and working smarter to achieve each goal…if I’m able to follow through and achieve my goals then I’m already closer to be being successful.
