Today we’d like to introduce you to Heddy Kuhl.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Heddy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We are a coffee and wine shop. I come from a long line of coffee farmers dating back to 1880. Being sixth generation, I wanted to continue the tradition in coffee. We are now offering my family’s coffee from Nicaragua seed-to-cup, importing from the farm, roasting and brewing our coffee for customers. My husband is a wine connoisseur. After a year in Europe, we developed the concept to open up a coffee and wine business. Fourteen years later, here we are. Serving food, coffee, teas, beer and wine.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Bumps. Always bumps along the way. Lost some coffee to hurricane Katrina. We imported via New Orleans at the time. Now, we import through Savannah and store our own coffee in Decatur, GA. We overspent in some areas, under spent in others.
Please tell us about JavaVino.
We are known for coffee. Proud of farmer-direct buying our house coffee directly from my mom. That’s our differentiator. We paired with wine, because we love both. Lots of similarities. Both crops, processed into amazing, world popular beverages.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Spend less on buildout. Reconsidered parking. Worked on branding earlier. Set a solid logo early on to stick to. It’s tough, because you need to establish yourself first and have to make money to pay for what you want.
