Helen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I took an interest in real estate when I moved to Atlanta to finish up college at the Clark Atlanta University. I was staying with some friends who were paying for a room in an off-campus student house. At the time, I remember saying to myself “Man, I wish I could be in a position to own a few properties to rent out.” But I was a college student with no money to even think about getting started. That was my first time thinking about real estate. As years went on, I got my degree in Mass Communications, with a focus in Radio/TV/Film. Shortly, before I graduated from CAU, I was able to secure a job at a local broadcast TV station. Unfortunately, after 10 yrs. there I was burnt out.
This led me to doing some soul searching. I thought, I’m no longer married, tired of this job, no kids. …let’s go for it. I got my Realtor’s license. It’s now been over six years and I haven’t looked back. I’m an Associate Broker. Currently, I work with two other agents.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth road…straight path to reach some success?? Heck no! It’s been up and down every year. My first year in the business, the sales prices were so low. I went through all my savings. Since then it’s been up and down. But I stay focused. The ups are finally more consistent. Personally, I struggled with releasing control and always needing things to be black and white. If you’ve worked in the business, then you know you have to let go and let God! Protect your client’s interest and provide the best service possible.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was close to my family and my core circle of friends…And that hasn’t changed. Many of my friends from elementary school and high school are still in contact and close today. Outside of this, I’ve always was about making some money…to be independent. At the age of 14yr I asked my mother if I could get a part time job to buy some personal things I wanted.
