Today we’d like to introduce you to Henry Crutcher.
Henry, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We, like most startups, started to scratch an itch the founder had: investment software for individuals was powerful enough for us. You could, with difficulty, find out what stocks matched a given strategy, if it was simple enough. What you couldn’t do was create a strategy, test it in the past, and tweak it. You couldn’t see what sorts of stocks it bought, or why it did what it did. Hedge funds and other large institutional players (we thought) had been doing this for ages, but there was nothing within the reach of individuals. So, we created it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been interesting: marketing is more of an issue than we could have imagined. Simply building something that is 10x better than the competition is not sufficient. Also, we were unfamiliar with the structure of the investment industry, meaning we found out that, in many cases, people who we thought were responsible for managing money are actually little more than sales people. There are many exceptions, but the exceptions prove the rule. In most cases, people find it easier to go with the flow, and collect more assets to manage, rather than focusing much attention on managing them effectively. This, I believe, gives the exceptions an opportunity to differentiate themselves from the crowd.
Please tell us about Equities Lab.
We focus on giving individuals and interested professional a way to effectively invest. They can create “smart beta” strategies that outperform while taking the human element out of the equation, if desired.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memories from childhood are playing role playing games with my friends, and learning computers and programming from my father.
