Meet Holly Long

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Long.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a fine art portrait and documentary natural light on location photographer. I like to mix the two into sessions where I can. I turned my hobby into a very small business 2 1/2 years ago. My children (I have FIVE) are my first and very most important job. My love for photography derived from them. They are my absolute favorite and most important subjects. I am obsessed with light, darkness, and finding the light within the dark. Right now I am focusing on motherhood photography which entails maternity, hospital newborns “Fresh 48’s”, Lifestyle Newborns, babies through their first year, children and families. Last year I completed a yearlong project of documenting my own children in their daily life otherwise known as a “365”. I not only took a picture a day for a year but I took several a day. That is where my love of documentary photography came to life. I find that documenting these fleeting moments are the images that we will treasure years down the line. I also love conceptual shoots with children however I mostly reserve them for my own children or personal projects however I would still love to do them with a client. In my free time If I am not guzzling coffee or chasing kids with my camera you can find me at Target drinking more coffee haha! I love lazy days, the quiet of the night, food, naps, and a good workout! I am a firm believer that you can find beauty as close as your front yard, that you are as happy as you decide to be, and that the cure for most alignments is a good belly laugh 😉

Please tell us about your art.
My art is storytelling and light infused. If I had to have one takeaway from my art I would want the viewer to feel like I have told them a story through my photographs. A story that moved them and stirred emotion. Anywhere from a simple portrait, a mother gazing at her newborn to children holding hands and playing together can tell a story. I want to tell a story that is unique to you. I want you to have something to treasure years to come and I want to bring you back to that moment in time through my photographs.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Words of wisdom to other photographers. Trust yourself. There will be people along the way that don’t want you to succeed, don’t listen to the noise and trust your gut. You will find your community, the one that supports you and they will be your anchor. You will know it in your heart and soul.

Don’t be afraid to try new things. You will fail. You will find the most growth through your failures.

Shoot with your heart. It wasn’t until I stopped worrying about all the technicalities that I finally became free. Yes you must master the technical side but once you do, let your heart be your guide.

Find someone or two that you trust and whose work you admire. Listen and open yourself to their critique. You will grow this way!

DO NOT GIVE UP! Never give up! If at first you don’t succeed try again. Try 1000 times if you have to but don’t stop.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
