Meet Ilene Shen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ilene Shen.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been fascinated with modeling ever since high school. I grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood in Seattle. My idea of beauty was flawed; I believed that I had to be tall, skinny, blond and blue-eyed in order to be beautiful. Growing up, I didn’t see a single model who looked like me. It wasn’t until I started expressing myself in front of the camera that I began to feel empowered. I took ownership of being sensual and alluring. I finally gave my curves the love they deserve. For the first time, I actually felt like I had the power and authority to express myself. I want to pursue modeling to inspire others to be confident and to go after their wildest dreams. Unfortunately, I didn’t pursue modeling in high school due to parental concerns, but now is the second best time! In addition to inspiring confidence in others, I love fashion, I love being in front of the camera showing off my sass and confidence, and meeting new people.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every dream does not happen without challenges, and I can certainly attest to that. I’m not your “typical model” – being 5’7 and size 4-6 is not what agencies want. Initially, I was upset at all the rejections because I wanted to be signed with an agency since it felt more “legitimate.” however, I transformed my modeling into a freelancing gig, and it’s actually pretty fun! I’ve met a ton of passionate people in the industry and had chances to walk in fashion shows and film music videos.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m the type of person to try anything at least once. I believe that the more exposure and experience one has in the modeling industry, the higher chance there is of being noticed. I shoot a range of themes, but what I’d really like to do is editorial or high fashion modeling.

I’m most proud of my determination and persistence regarding modeling. There were so many points along the way where I thought I wouldn’t succeed. If I had a dollar for every time I was rejected because of my size or height, I’d be rich. But yet I’ve managed to work with some of the most incredible photographers and crew and the chance to be featured in a lot of projects. I’m very grateful.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Absolutely. I’d like to give a big shoutout to my family – mom, dad, and tiffany – you are truly my support system and even though initially we disagreed, you have always given me your unwavering support. Also to my best friend, Emily – you’re basically my second sister. Through trials and tribulations, you have always encouraged me to go after my dream and been there for me. Also another friend, David – I think you were the one who knew about my goal to model from the very start. You believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Thank you all so much, it means the world to me.
