Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivana Vera.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I came to Atlanta five years ago to go to SCAD. I’m originally from Venezuela and I’ve always had a passion for art, so when I heard about this amazing art school, I couldn’t lose the opportunity. My first quarter at SCAD, I was in awe, but I also wanted more. So, I joined the cross country team. My freshman year I was just practicing with them since I joined when the season had already started, but then my sophomore year I was officially on the team. And it was until my junior year that I found my first internship, so you would say that I had a pretty busy college life.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a motion designer and I personally like to create organic animations. Different from what I do at work, I like to explore with the human shape and find a way to make my story relatable. I want the viewer to see their own story within. For this, I use a lot of live action video and combine it with typography and then compose it all together. When I create my videos, I don’t try to reach everyone so I can change the world, I try to reach just a few and little by little start making a difference.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My advice would be, don’t stay in a job just because it’s a job and it pays the bills. I know it sounds like that’s exactly like you should do, but if what you are creating inside that job doesn’t make you grow and doesn’t fulfill you as a person or artist, then it’s not worth staying there. Understand that better things will always come. Don’t get stuck because you are afraid to lose what you have and see what’s out there, you’ll regret that later. But also know that even if that’s not the right job for you, you can still learn from it, so not everything is a losing battle.
