Today we’d like to introduce you to Izzy Spears.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
You could say I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I started my first side-hustle when I was just nine years old. At that age, I was attempting to host yard sales and eventually started selling hand sewn pillows and ties. Ultimately, I think I have always been on a search for a career path in which I could apply my creative spirit, helper intuition and business logic all into one. Long story short, Plurvy, fashion for the plus and curvy, is exactly what I have been looking for.
Professionally, I have worked as a marketing and branding professional for over nine years. Creatively, I am a photographer, writer, producer, creative director, now fashion designer and more. As a serial entrepreneur, I have owned several businesses in digital and print publishing, marketing, home-staging, photography, real-estate and now fashion.
Plurvy, my most passionate project yet, was born from my love and work as a body positive and self-love advocate. As a plus-size woman on a journey of learning to love her body as well as motivating other women to love their bodies, I wanted to do more for the community that has done so much for me.
I truly found my voice once I found other women that looked like me. I wanted to help other women look and feel good about themselves with effortless, expressive fashion, thus, Plurvy was born.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would be lying if I said entrepreneurship is easy. Learning an entirely new industry such as appeal, textiles and manufacturing, definitely has its struggles. I worked retail in college and I have two grandmothers that are seamstresses but, even with that insight, there were so many learning curves I had to overcome starting a fashion brand. For example, I had to learn about fabrics, vendors, and an entirely different set of terminology. Learning about the difference between wholesaling, private labels, dropshipping and other methods of doing business in the apparel industry was slightly overwhelming at first. I say, at first, because I had to constantly remind myself that it is okay to learn something new. I took my time, set milestones and moved forward. I was willing to make the mistakes I needed to make, in order to learn and grow, as both an entrepreneur and a person.
Please tell us about Plurvy.
Plurvy is an e-commerce brand that makes expressive, stylish, effortless-fashion for the plus and curvy woman. We offer sizes starting at an extra-large and go up to a 6x in some styles but a 4x in most styles. We are proud of the work we are doing with-in the plus-size community. We take pride in helping women know that no matter what, you are beautiful. We have tees, crop-tops, hoodies, crews, biker shorts and more. All of our styles have something positive on them. Our goal is to make clothes that all bodies look cute in. You can put the garment on, and go out the door- knowing you look great!
We are different from other brands because we are:
1. Always looking for feedback from the community. We ask our community which colors and styles they like, prior to launching. (We listen)
2. All our garments have hang tags that say,”you are beautiful”.
3. We are about making people feel as good as they do on the inside on the outside.
4. We understand the importance of inclusivity. We love to work with models and influencers of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities and backgrounds.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would not do anything differently. I feel every rock I unturned and every road I took lead me in the right direction. The journey IS the destination. But, let’s be real, if I lost everything and had to start from zero, my one piece of advice would be, “BE FEARLESS. Even now, I am cautious. I try to remind myself that you only live once, so make a slash, live on the wild side and be brave!
