Today we’d like to introduce you to J. Alphonse Nicholson.
J. Alphonse Nicholson is an American born actor/percussionist based in Brooklyn, NY. He emerged in North Carolina after his debut as the lead in Howard L. Craft’s “Caleb Calypso and the Midnight Marauders” in 2009. Nicholson since then, with a few films, tv shows and several plays under his belt, has received national recognition for his work in theaters around the country. Most recent credit include Days Of Rage – Second Stage and Signature Theatre’s PARADISE BLUE (Blue). Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve experienced a lot throughout my career. Many ups and downs and unexpected life-changing circumstances. However, I choose not to dwell on the hard times. Everyone has struggles, big and small, the goal is to stay somewhere between the mediums and highs.
Please tell us about what you do as a musician.
I’ve been a musician my entire life. Childhood friends and family expected me to have a career in music. In 2008, all that changed when I begin to study theater at North Carolina Central University. I fell in love with the storytelling on the stage as well as the screen. 11 years later, many people know me as a father, actor, and drummer. I’ve been blessed to use my musical gift in multiple productions as well as make room for myself outside of the theater walls.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I’ve always loved spending time with my family.
