Meet Jabari Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jabari Jones.

Jabari, before we jump into specific questions about your practice, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In college, I had some legal troubles during the first three years of my career at the University of Georgia. I had an ill-conceived notion of the “American Dream,” and it finally caught up with me. One of the attorneys that I retained to represent me nearly ruined my case with his incompetent service and uncaring attitude. I was blessed to make it through that dark time despite this criminal defense attorney’s lackluster representation. I understood all of the legal proceedings and at some point, during the experience, I realized that I could do his job better than him. It was not easy, but I applied to law school, got accepted, and began pursuing my goal of becoming a lawyer. That was around 2009. I’ve been operating my own law practice since 2013, specializing in criminal defense and personal injury cases.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been easy, but nothing worthwhile is ever easy. The biggest struggle I had in becoming an attorney was getting accepted to law school with a criminal record and sub-par grades. Despite the pre-law advisor telling me she did not believe I would be a “competitive” candidate for law school, and my lawyer telling me that law school was out of the question for me because of the level of “criminal activity” I had going on, I pushed forward. I took the LSAT twice in order to get a score I was satisfied with, but I only had a 2.7 GPA when I graduated college. Additionally, I was on felony first offender probation when I began applying for admission into law school.

I applied to 6 law schools and was rejected by all except the University of the District of Columbia, David A. Clarke School of Law. All I needed was one yes. A philosophy professor who took an interest in me informed me that this school may accept me despite the legal issues. I passed the bar exam on my first attempt, was unanimously certified to practice law by the character and fitness board, and never looked back.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
It is my honor to represent people who have been charged with criminal offenses (misdemeanors, felonies, DUIs, traffic offenses, etc.) and those who have been injured as a result of another’s negligence. I never lose sight of the fact that I represent people, not cases. Many of my clients come to me during some serious storms, and it is my responsibility to guide them through to the best of my ability, every time.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m currently writing a novel that is a fictional account of what path I may have taken if I hadn’t been drawn to this noble profession.
