Today we’d like to introduce you to Jae Indigo.
Hi Jae, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a very religious family. Most of them live in South Florida, so I frequently traveled between the two states when I was younger. My great-grandmother actually owns a church down there called Pratt Memorial. I’ve loved singing for my whole life and singing in the church gave me a great outlet to showcase my love for singing. From there, the sky was the limit.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The saying “You are your own worst enemy” really applies to me I think. As I got older, I let insecurities and a lack of confidence really obscure the vision of who I know I can be. The road to being a successful creative requires you to have a thick skin, and growing up in Atl is not for the weak. For a long time, it felt like I was just a small speck, dropped in the middle of the pacific ocean. Who would notice me when there’s so much talent here? I really had to get a grip and trust in God and the talents he’s blessed me with. Once I did that, I was ready for anything.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m most known for being an alternative rnb artist from the heart of Atlanta. I also dabble in traditional and digital art from time to time. My passion is art in general really. I feel like art surrounds us every day, and the ability to create is evidence that God is real. I’m most proud of myself for finally taking the dive into discovering who I really am. The qualities that had others calling me weird are the same qualities that set me apart from the crowd.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I miss my childhood to be honest. I was the kid you’d see outside looking for worms or cool bugs for my bug catcher. I always liked discovering something new, felt like there was a certain magic in that. I’ve always had friends but most of the time I was just considered the weird tall girl. I grew up always feeling like sort of an outcast and I think this is really where my lack of confidence started. I loved reading fiction and I was into manga and anime too. To me, books were like an escape that helped me pass the time. Nonetheless, I always had the people that rocked with me and that was really all I needed.
