Meet Jamaal Torrance of Good People Visuals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamaal Torrance.

Jamaal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first caught the ‘photography bug’ four years ago. I was working on a business venture with a friend who is a fellow creative and photographer. I started with product and lifestyle shots and it grew from there. I’ve always had a creative eye and a passion for storytelling. And with video and photography, I’m able to tap into that creativity to capture moments in time for my clients.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, and my biggest struggle so far has been with perfectionism. I’ve spent countless hours perfecting my craft, and I never feel like it’s enough. On one hand, it keeps me hungry and wanting to learn more. On the other hand, at times it has prevented me from promoting my work and potentially finding more business. As the saying goes, I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my s#&t. And I’m always striving to put my very best work out there.

Please tell us about Good People Visuals.
I started Good People Visuals as an outlet to express myself through visual art. I’ve developed a love for video and photography, and have spent the past few years honing my skills in both. In my company, I specialize in portraiture, event photography and wedding and event videography. But I’ve also captured headshots, interviews, behind-the-scene videos and many other projects.

I’m most proud of my clients’ reactions when they receive their images or video. I love seeing the smiles and the tears of joy and even hearing “That’s dope!” when they see the finished product.

What sets me apart from others is the time I have put into learning my craft and my attention to detail. I take my time to understand the elements of a good photo or video. These include balance, lighting and artistic elements like texture and color balance. My goal is not only to capture an amazing shot but to also create a lasting memory for my clients. I’m always asking myself, “How can this be better?”

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
What I enjoyed most about my childhood was life before technology took over. I would hang out at my best friends’ house and we would spend all day creating. Whether we were putting together puzzles, drawing or building with our LEGO collection (I was a self-proclaimed LEGO engineer), we had the time and space to think creatively and I believe that has contributed to my desire to stay creative as an adult.
