Meet Jamaya Mickles of Ahana Birth Services & Ahana’s Blends of Vitality

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamaya Mickles.

Jamaya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Having two traumatic births with my first two children made me wonder how many other women had bad experiences during childbirth. When I did my research I learned that the Black maternal mortality rate was disproportionately high. I have always wanted a large family but at the rate, things were going and considering the Black maternal mortality rate, I didn’t feel that it was safe to have another child. I had to make some changes. So I looked into becoming a Birth Doula. The more I dived into birth and how Black women are treated in birth, the more I felt I needed to know more and do more to help other families. I learned that something so innate has become overcomplicated and volatile. Holistic fertility, birth, postpartum and general health became my focus.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My greatest challenge has been building awareness. Many people don’t know what it is that a doula does and that a Doula is beneficial in any birth situation, but also in preconception and postpartum.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Holistic fertility, birth and postpartum doula and herbal health consultant. Ahana specializes in holistic birth services for families of color.

Our families love us because we foster personal relationships, which is important to help each family reach their goal. Mother’s Blessing Ceremonies are a favorite amongst the Ahana community. Moms get to have their closest friends and family celebrate them and honor the rite of passage known as birth.

The goal is to make support and health more affordable so that’s a part of our mission. Families of color receive a discount of 20% off of our birth packages and all  current birth clients receive 20% off of every service and product that we offer.

I am so proud that Ahana is what I needed when I birthed my babies. Ahana teaches women and men how to listen to their bodies to achieve optimal health. Ahana stands for everything Authentic, Organic, Natural, Healing and REAL.

I’m just a Black Mama Goddess determined to make a difference with other Black families, Mamas and Goddesses!

Any big plans?
I look forward to training more Doulas in natural birth and herbal health so that I can reach families in other states. I’m also super excited about our weekend birth retreats that we will host for moms and dads to relax, learn and participate in fun activities like couples yoga, massage therapy, etc.
