Meet James Davis of Synapse Photography Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Davis.

James, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, Synapse Photography really just happened! I had been working in real estate and was realizing the office work was not really fueling my fire. I considered starting my business to focus on real estate photography since I was already well versed in what style photos were required to sell houses. I did a couple of real estates shoots in the beginning, but soon some friends of my wife needed engagement photos on a budget and she offered me up! From there things really spiraled into what Synapse Photography is today. The friends happened to be dancers and they connected me to other dancers and choreographers in the Atlanta area and I started working more and more with these movers and found that I really enjoyed capturing movement through my lens. It just so happens my wife is directly connected in the dance scene here in Atlanta, so I am always meeting new people and finding collaborators to work with.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely had its challenges. I am a self-taught photographer and originally started with a mid-level camera and limited lens options. I have been extremely lucky to be surrounded by creatives and other extremely talented people throughout my learning process. The style of Synapse Photography has been influenced by every collaborator that I’ve worked with. It has been especially interesting moving in to the dance photography world. I didn’t know much about dance and working with different performance venues with extremes of lighting and movement. In my early days, my first long term collaborator and client was starting a small dance company herself and we really were able to work together to develop her look and my style. I’ve carried all of this with me as I’ve moved on to larger jobs and added better equipment to my business.

We’d love to hear more about Synapse Photography Atlanta.
Synapse Photography is a mobile photography business in the Decatur/Atlanta area. While Synapse Photography consults for pretty much any type of photoshoot, I specialize in dance photo/event photography. I am known for my collaboration with my clients. Working with artists can be challenging, as I am an artist myself. I really like to take the time with each client to get an understanding of how they want their photos to look since the subject is their dancer or choreography or movement. I will add my own style to create an overall photo that showcases my client’s art in my art form.

What were you like growing up?
I was really a chameleon growing up. I dabbled in many different things, from playing football to be captain of our high school drumline, to teaching 4-H shooting sports and drawing anime/manga. I really enjoyed the challenge of new things. I had a few great friends, many of which are still some of my closest friends today. I always liked arts, music, photography and film. I just never saw it as my career path until adulthood.
