Today we’d like to introduce you to James Tyler Wallace.
James Tyler, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Both of my parents were traveling artists. That’s how my mom (from England) and my dad (from Newnan) met each other in Nashville, where I was born. I was constantly surrounded by music growing up so learning guitar, singing and how to compose my own music never seemed like much of a task. It’s was more so something that my family and I bonded over; it was first nature. By the age of 15, I started performing in local venues just to get my feet on the ground as a musician. By 17, I sort of fell out of love with the acoustic gigs I was playing. I didn’t feel like I was evolving enough in my craft.
I wanted to reach more people. I wanted my music to make people feel something bigger than themselves, but I didn’t have enough real world experience.
So, I dropped out of high school, moved to Europe for a year and played shows, made friends/mistakes but I grew so much as an individual. Discomfort is necessary. I was finally starting to find myself in this crazy industry. Once I moved back to America, I taught my myself how to produce! I started to rebrand myself and now, two singles later; that’s where I’m at today, hoping to do it all again soon.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all but with that being said we wouldn’t know the high’s if it weren’t for the lows!
When I was 14 I was diagnosed with Prolonged QT Syndrome; a genetic heart condition. This along with many other things changing in my life, I got overwhelmed. I started to do a lot of research about the condition and read that between the hours of 3-4 AM your heart is at its weakest point. So, out of fear, I found myself up and about at those hours trying to find something to do. Typically, I’d sit outside and look at the moon. I was fascinated by it and for some reason, I found a lot of comfort in it.
Shortly after at 15, my first single “October Moon”, was released.
There have been many other challenges but this was a huge breaking point for myself as a musician. It was the first time I used music as an outlet (at least when it came to writing.) Who knows? Maybe if I didn’t have the heart condition, I wouldn’t be writing music.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about James Tyler Wallace – what should we know?
I’m a 20-year-old singer, songwriter, producer, performer.
I make a living out of performing but I’ve recently fallen in love with producing. It’s a whole new world. I like to think I’m known for my individualism. I love collaboration but I also love having my own time to create. It’s nice to have other ears in the room, but sometimes there can be too many mouths. I try to put a spotlight on subjects that other people don’t. Music is extremely powerful and timeless, I like to take advantage of that.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Be genuine! Build relationships with your listeners! You have to be personable. I love being the first person to bring up conversation. Half the time I make a fool out of myself but I’m being real and people recognize that. I always try to go out of my way to let everyone know that they’re appreciated for their support. Without them, I would be nothing.
