Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamia Nash.
Jamia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born August 21, 1996 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I started singing when I was two years old and then professionally singing at five years old. My career started after singing “Fallin” by Alicia Keys in the Showtime At the Apollo competition. I won first place and had the privilege of being on the real Apollo stage. Soon after, I was on the Maury Show, Half and Half, My Wife and Kids, and talk shows such as Jay Leno Show, Tony Danza Show, and much more. I did the voice for Uniqua on the Backyardigans as well for five years. I sang at the White House for President Bush and also was a speaker at the Ted x NASA event. I was the youngest ever to perform at the Academy Awards for the nominated song “Raise It Up” for the film “August Rush.” I was on the road with David Foster as well following after Celine Dion and Michael Bublé, Andrea Bocelli, and Michael Bolton and also were brought on stage by the beautiful Diana Ross. I have been doing this for 17 years and it has had its highs and lows but I’m so grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into the woman I am today. This is only the beginning.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have had to overcome depression, feeling of not being enough despite the accolades and constant confirmation on social media outlets. And just having to be isolated from family when I needed that love in my most trying times. Because of me being on the road so much there was a gap or void in my life that I didn’t know how to fill.
Mya Simone – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’ve been doing this music thing for 17 years and I strive to leave an impact on this world musically and just as an artist. I have so much I still want to share with the world. I wanna give back.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is realizing the mistake and continuing on and fixing the things that caused the trial and error. My biggest motto is if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.
