Today we’d like to introduce you to Janay Warren.
Janay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Janay’s closet literally started with Janay’s Closet! I was on maternity leave from work and in the “nesting” stage of pregnancy when I decided to clean out my closet. Something I dreaded for some time but I was in the mood to get it done. I was (and still am to this day) a faithful thrifter and had a closet full of Vintage Finds. My closet was A MESS! Clothes were everywhere! It took hours to clean my closet. I was picking through piles and piles of clothes coming across items I don’t remember purchasing or that no longer fit me.
It was right then and there where I decided I would sell all the items I no longer wanted. I shopped on Etsy a few times prior and decided that would be my selling platform. I later came across Poshmark and Mercari. These are great selling tools that I still use to sell items. I made quite a few sales on these platforms. Did some pop-up shops and finally decided to branch out and start my own website and here we are today, Janayscloset.com! I absolutely love what I do. The entire process is exciting and fun to do. I love to see how customers style their products after purchasing. I so appreciate all of my customers and I’m excited for Janay’s Closet’s future.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not! Lol, I’ve learned so much since starting my business and a lot of times, I’ve had to learn the hard way. But I definitely think they were necessary for my growth. I think my biggest obstacles are having to do everything myself. Other than my models, I don’t really have a team. I literally do everything. From purchasing to styling to photoshoots to editing pictures to pricing to marketing to writing blogs, it’s really ALL on me. And on top of that, I still work a regular job bartending and I’m a wife and mother of a three-year-old. It can be overwhelming and stressful but I’m doing what I love, And the road to entrepreneurship isn’t easy because if it were everyone would be doing it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Janays Closet Boutique – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
So basically, our motto is “where vintage meets modern style.” We purchase and resell vintage or thrifted items and create a modern look that can be worn in the current time that we live in. A lot of people hear the word vintage and just automatically think old, whereas vintage clothing is timeless. It can be worn in any decade. I’m not big on fast fashion or trends. I feel like trends barely last a season but vintage lasts forever. And that is what I strive to showcase and sell within my business. When you buy vintage, you feel exclusive because you won’t see anyone else wearing your clothing it’s one of a kind. I do purchase some wholesale items but I’m very selective on the items I choose. And I only purchase a very limited quantity of each style. We also sell jewelry, in which I’m a firm believer that your outfit isn’t complete without accessories. They give your look that extra pop it needs. I’m an accessory junkie, so it only made sense for me to sell jewelry as well. We promote classy, elegant and sexy styles, which to me, are key points in being a classy woman. Class never goes out of style.
What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
I’m grateful I can combine all of My passions (fashion, photography and writing) all into this one business. I have a style blog on my website as well, where I talk about anything pertaining to fashion. I’ve always wanted to write a book of some sort. I am currently working on a magazine for my boutique. It’ll be to promote my business talk about fashion and other topics of interest for women. I plan to put out the 1st issue this Spring. It will only be four issues a year (one for every season) I’m super excited about it but it is A LOT of work! I also plan on doing a fashion show soon as well.
