Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Schmidt.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am an expressionistic landscape painter, also known as a ‘colorist’. A child of the ‘60s I grew up in Birmingham Michigan, the second of six children. As a young girl I devoted many Saturday mornings to drawing classes at our local Community House where the seed for my visual expression was planted. In pursuit of an arts career I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the College for Creative Studies, Detroit Michigan, and in 1982 I relocated to Phoenix Arizona where I managed a successful graphic design studio. With the new millenium and ready for a change I shifted my focus from graphic design to painting and returned to college earning a Masters in Painting in 2004 from Arizona State University.
At ASU I developed a unique gestural approach to painting that soon defined my expressionistic style. I became passionate about the emotional personality of color and its ability to create movement and excitement in a painting. In the years following my MFA I have received national and international recognition including two separate invitations to the esteemed Florence Biennale. Additionally, I have shown and lectured at museums and universities throughout the country. My constant quest for beauty and inspiration continues to take me from the coast of Maine to the countryside of California and from the Colorado mountains to the Carolina lowlands. I currently have a studio located in the River Arts District of Asheville, North Carolina. Eagerly sought by arts enthusiasts and galleries, I can also be found in prestigious private, public and corporate collections.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a painter of abstract landscapes. I work in oils and paint almost exclusively in my studio in the River Arts District of Asheville NC. When painting I envision the environments that move me the most and translate them with distinctive color palettes and energetic brushstrokes. I paint from memory with a primary focus on color and gesture. My work explores the line between representation and abstraction by pointing to a specific location yet leaving room for interpretation.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
