Today we’d like to introduce you to Janeida Griffin.
Janeida, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in the beauty industry in 2005, I went to cosmetology school – thinking I would become a master cosmetologist specializing in skincare – but when I was enrolled I learned nothing about skin. I became discouraged and QUIT! I went back to corporate world in the medical administration field and worked till I was laid off in 2008! When I got laid off, I just knew it was finally time for me to LIVE MY DREAMS, realizing that God made me uncomfortable in my previous careers to PUSH me towards my calling again – SKIN and BROWS! So, in 2009, I enrolled in an aesthetic program with the Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics – BEST decision I’ve made in my entire life!
After graduating from aesthetics school in October 2010, I immediately secured a career working for a top resort spa- Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga. I worked hard and flourished to become one of the lead aestheticians and soon relocated to Charlotte! After working in Charlotte at another resort, Ballantyne Resort & Spa, I eventually moved back to Atlanta, where I quickly became employed at a well-known waxing franchise. After working there for years, and waiting every year for a raise in my commission or a promotion to a trainer – I realized that I no longer wanted to work for ANYONE. Not only did this company fire me in the past for working outside of their establishment while I was on maternity leave, but they offered me my job back and, of course, I went, I just had a baby and needed income. But after that ordeal, it made me realize I could NEVER work for anyone else, as my sanity and income depended on them! I could not live life like this anymore…
With a budget of $50, in December 2017, I opened up my very own brow suite! The birth of The Brow Girl! I rented a studio suite and my clients QUICKLY caught on and followed me to my studio space. It was small and quaint and I was quite proud of it! I was the very first one to offer an exclusive service called “Henna Brows” which stimulates hair growth in the brow area while providing a permanent makeup look without needles or blades and eliminates the need to “fill-in” your brows for weeks! It was booming and 95% of customers were getting that service with me. After less than six months of opening, I became overbooked and began to offer more services, from brows to Brazilian waxing, lashes, facials and permanent makeup. I was working six days a week, and each and every day, I was booked back to back! My clients travel from out of state and from miles away.
After realizing the potential for The Brow Girl, I came upon an opportunity to rent a storefront commercial location for my business. It was PERFECT! Bigger and better for my growing clientele. So, in September 2018, I opened my very first storefront commercial space for The Brow Girl and it’s been nothing but successful. Now, I’m educating other professionals on different skills to bring to their salon for client retention, from brow threading classes, to waxing classes! My goal is to eventually get a team and open more locations. The Brow Girl is not only a salon to get your brows done, but it is a movement. I’m changing lives one brow at a time and at each and EVERY appointment it is an EXPERIENCE! When your passion and skill come together, a masterpiece forms!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely been a struggle. I’ve dealt with jealousy from competitors, being fired from a company I help build from the ground up, me and my family being homeless during my transition to opening my salon. I’ve made a ton of sacrifices but it is all worth it. I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything. It has made me stronger and tougher to be able to deal with reality. The Brow Girl wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my struggles.
Please tell us about your work.
Quite frankly, the Atlanta market is “over saturated.” Let’s face it, brow artists and lash salons are popping up left and right. One thing that makes me different is, this is TRULY my passion. I started in the industry way before it became popular. I do not do ANY of this for money- but because I genuinely LOVE what I do.
“Changing lives”… The Brow Girl specialty is “Henna Brow” after researching for years a “natural” alternative to thicker fuller brows, I found the “henna brow” technique which started overseas in countries like Australia and Brazil. It’s now gaining popularity here in the states and I’m proud to be “one of the first” to offer it at my salon! Of course, I’m known for creating beautiful brows, but I’m also known for my seven min. Brazilian wax technique! Which I now teach to professionals! Thorough, quick almost painless wax using my own custom blend natural chocolate wax which will be on the market to licensed professionals soon!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Baking with my grandma! I think being in the kitchen and my grandma showing me how to add “love” to cooking has taught me to always add love in anything that I do! So, when clients get their brows restored by me – they feel the love!
