Meet Janelle James of James RE Investments in Downtown Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle James.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story began 30 days after high school where I joined the United States Army I deployed to Iraq at the age of 18 and spent my 19th birthday in combat. I always knew I wanted to be independent which was the reason behind joining the military at such a young age I was able to make $40,000 at 19 years old which inspired me to go even harder.

I was a troubled child as my mother died when I was seven years old. I was put out of high school in Washington DC. Had to go to school in Maryland where I continued having behavioral issues in school & ended up going to night school. Again just a very troubled child so the expectation of me and my future was slim to none. From family friends almost anyone that knew me. After seeing how successful I could be at the young age of 19, my dreams became bigger and I soared.

Following my separation from the military, I experienced some adversity as I could not find a employment although I was a United States veteran.

I’ve always had a business mind and creative ideas for problems I could solve but I still put it aside to pursue my interest in information technology. Being in IT as a younger black woman gave me a sense of pride because I was the last face that my colleagues would expect to walk in as the new team members on Monday morning

After moving from job to job climbing up the Financial ladder, I came across one position where I ended up being laid off and this is when my survival mode kicked in. I began my first business in transportation. From this success, I knew that I could do anything that I put my mind to. It really gave me the confidence to put all of the ideas for businesses in motion. I also was interested in helping more people that looked like me become successful business owners.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Never a smooth road but what is!

I lost a five-figure investment in my first business when I Basically made a bad investment into some equipment. I gave a gentleman that at the time was homeless and needed work a position at my company. Where he then stole from us three weeks later. Employees/partners I’ve worked With caused me to lose relationships and contracts ultimately MONEY. Struggle with keeping the momentum and believing you can keep going to accomplish goal after goal. Personally, I still struggle to balance five business five kids and a husband.
