Meet Jasmin Gresham McKenzie of J. Gresham Realty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Gresham McKenzie

Hi Jasmin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I jumped into real estate right after graduating from Savannah State University in 2015. Like most college grads, I was out there grinding, trying to find a job—and honestly, it was rough. I ended up stumbling into real estate thanks to a family friend who was killing it in the business. So, during that awkward “what now?” phase between graduating and landing a “big girl job,” I decided to give real estate school a shot. I got my license in 2016, and I was so excited !

I didn’t dive straight into real estate though, because some of those “no’s” on job applications turned into “yes’s.” So I worked a regular 9-to-5 for a couple of years. To be honest, I wasn’t feeling those jobs at all, and I dreaded going in every day. So, in 2018, I said “peace out” to my “good government” job and went full-time with real estate. It’s been a crazy ride of learning and growing, but I absolutely love it. Helping my clients hit their goals and educating them along the way is what keeps me going!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly, smooth is definitely not how I’d describe my real estate career. It’s been a wild ride with some smooth moments in between. If you don’t know, real estate is basically a dog-eat-dog game. If you’re not hustling, deals just don’t happen.

It’s kinda like starting your own business—you’re all hyped at first, but staying in it? That’s the real challenge. When that initial excitement of working for yourself fades, discipline and consistency has to kick in. And, if I’m being real, that’s been my biggest struggle.

So, if you’re thinking about going full-time in real estate (or any business, really), figure out your “WHY” early. It’s so different when you’re the one holding yourself accountable. At a 9-5, your boss does that for you. When you’re on your own, it’s all on you. You have to want success even when you’re not feeling it, because if you don’t prospect, lead-generate, and put yourself out there, you’re not getting paid. Simple as that.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Wow, where do I even begin? Yes, I absolutely believe in taking risks—I’m definitely a risk-taker. I’ve walked away from unfulfilling jobs, gone skydiving, successfully delivered my child at home with the help of my midwife, and pivoted multiple times in my business ventures. Many would consider these things risky, but for me, it’s simply living life to the fullest! I’m someone who enjoys thinking outside the box and challenging the norms that society has set for us. It’s not that I’m fearless, but I’m not interested in living a life that just goes along with the status quo—especially when I believe the potential reward outweighs the risk. Some of the most successful people got to where they are because they were willing to take risks. And when I say risks, I don’t mean just financial ones. Dr. Sebi is someone I’ve always admired. His holistic health practices and healing methods have inspired so many, yet what he represented was seen as risky by those who rely on traditional medicine. I try to keep an open mind, ask questions, and sometimes, that leads to taking risks.
