Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Golden.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My junior year of high school is when I first knew I wanted to go into therapy because everyone always came to me for advice. Growing up, I saw my niece struggle with her own mental health and I always wanted to learn more about the brain and how to help her/others. I started my journey by attending Valdosta State University in 2017 and obtaining a Bachelor’s in Psychology and a minor in African American studies. Then, I continued my education at VSU and obtained a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy in July of 2022. Once I got out of school, I became a therapist at a rehabilitation facility for those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. I’ve always wanted to work with children and especially within the black community, so I switched to private practice where I am able to see any population.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road was not smooth at all. I struggled with depression and anxiety throughout school. There were times I wanted to end my own life and give up on college because of personal issues I had going on while in school. Coming out of school, I was so excited to get my first job just for it to be shut down a few months later. Once I got a new job after that, I lost it the week before Christmas. But I know God has kept me and has pushed me to keep going. Because I personally know how it feels to struggle with mental health, I want to be able to help others and I can relate as well.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work for an amazing company, Open Door Talk where I am a Marriage and Family Therapist. I see kids, teens, young adults, and adults. I provide therapy from a systematic lens, that is, I view the client’s problem from all aspects of their life (work, romantic relationships, family relationships, school, and any other systems the client is a part of). I specialize in CBT, DBT, Collaborative Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. I am most proud of being able to help others with their mental health and end the stigma that mental health is not important. I believe that as a therapist I am able to be relatable, down-to-earth, compassionate, and funny, all while still being professional. I want my clients to feel like they are able to have a safe space when coming to see me and know that they are in good hands.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice is to research and go out into your community to network. Social media is a huge platform for networking as well. You cannot be shy and have to be able to sell yourself and be confident in your brand.
