Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Hubbard.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In October 2017, I started my new career as a travel nurse after being permanent staff in Statesville, North Carolina, and Charlotte, North Carolina for two years after graduating from UNC Charlotte in 2015. Becoming a travel nurse was a new avenue in my nursing career and I really wanted to share my journey with my friends and family, Initially, I got the travel bug when I turned 22 years old when I went to Panama City Beach with my friends for Spring Break 2015. That was one of the best times of my life and my first time organizing a trip with friends. I felt so alive and carefree from that trip. Ever since then, I knew I wanted to travel more and see different parts of the country and the world and not just see them on Instagram or Facebook. I wanted that feeling again and again. I knew that travel nursing was a way for me to see the country and still work in my dream field so I decided to pursue travel nursing. Now that I was in the industry, I was ready to share with the world. I began brainstorming for Jazzy Travels around November 2017 after I started my first travel nurse contract in Laurinburg, North Carolina. I have always been a great writer and writing was my first love. I figured a blog would be perfect for me. I linked up with a really good friend of mine and sorority sister named Tempestt Swinson and she designed my website and created my logo. I also linked up with my best friend, Taylon Moorer, and she has taken all of my pictures that are seen on my website. I wanted to start Jazzy Travels because I wanted to highlight my experiences as a travel nurse and my leisure travel experiences outside of work. Over a year later, I have done six travel nurse contracts so far. Jazzy Travels has fourteen blog posts about travel nursing – including two 3-part series- and six blog posts about my leisure travels. I have been blessed to have gone out of the country three times to Jamaica and the Grand Cayman (both through Carnival Cruise Lines), Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and Bali, Indonesia. Within the US, I have been to numerous cities and states (not going to list them all, haha). I have done travel nurse contracts in North Carolina, Memphis, Tennessee, and Richmond, Virginia, I am currently doing my sixth travel nurse contract in Atlanta, Georgia.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a tough road for me, but I do experience challenges with Jazzy Travels. One of the main ones is consistency. Unfortunately, I am not as consistent as I would like to be due to life and work. I usually put out one blog post a month. When I do push out content, I ALWAYS make sure that it is quality, something that my readers will enjoy, and that they gain something or learn something new from each blog post. I am also working towards being more active on my Jazzy Travels Instagram page to engage with my followers. Another challenge is that this is a one-woman show. I don’t have a “team” currently so a lot of the things (like my flyers to announce new blog posts) I have had to create on my own. I am fine with it because it challenges me and I am able to learn new skills. I am learning to use my resources and to reach out to people to help me with flyers or website design because I would love to revamp my Jazzy Travels site in 2020. A personal challenge of mine is comparison. We all do it so it is no secret. I am learning to not let comparison overtake me and discourage me but use it as an encouragement to do better and be better.
Jazzy Travels – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Jazzy Travels is my blog that highlights my travel nurse adventures and leisure travel experiences. I have recently expanded and put out my first vlog on YouTube about my Bali trip that I took in June. My YouTube channel will focus more on my leisure travel experiences. I am currently a travel nurse that works at a different location about every three months. The primary population that I work with as a nurse are medical-surgical adult patients. I am most proud of the messages that I receive in regards to my blog posts. I have had people tell me that I inspire them to start travel nursing and even just to travel more (from my non-nurse audience). I love when I receive comments under my blog posts because it shows that people are reading and engaging and want to learn more about how I travel, who I go through, what tips I can offer, etc. What sets me apart is that I want to impact and inspire others. Fame, likes, etc. do not impress me. I just want to reach people from all over and get them to understand and realize that there’s a whole big world beyond our backyard. God created this beautiful planet for a reason. There is so much to do and explore and I just want other people to see that if I can do it, so can they. I haven’t seen a lot but I have done a lot and there are definitely more places that I plan to visit within the next few years.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The moment in my career that I look back on the most is during my first year of travel nursing when I did my second travel nurse assignment in Memphis, Tennessee. That was the first time that I went anywhere BY MYSELF – I was 10 hours away from home. That assignment in many ways helped me become the woman and nurse that I am today. It got me out of my comfort zone. It gave me exposure to a new place and city. Those three months were crucial to me because I relied on God during so much of those moments. My family and friends were so supportive, especially my mom, my dad, and my sisters Jeanine and Jade. This was also where my first 3 part series of Jazzy Travels was birthed. Travel nursing was already a leap in itself and to actually go from doing a local assignment to a long distance one really tested me. It all turned out for the good and made me prepared for my next long distance assignments in Richmond, Virginia and currently, Atlanta, Georgia. I can only thank God for planting that seed in me. I do not know where my nursing career will take me in the next 5-10 years, but wherever it leads, I will be prepared and ready for all that God has for me.
