Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Wilson.
Jasmine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
At the age of 13 my aunt Doris taught me how to dutch braid on my mannequin… this is all where it started. That next year (2015) my mom and I moved to Atlanta, where I knew no one especially a person who can braid my hair. Eventually, I decided I might take on the challenge and do it myself. I’ll admit looking back at the first time I braided hair it was horrible. Yet we all know practice makes perfect. I soon started doing my close friends hair, then began working with an experienced braider, Mrs. Lisa. She taught me some things and I did the same. Then I began working individually from home on the weekends or sometimes after school on weekdays. After staying consistent and constantly working on my craft I witness myself getting better and better day by day. I have to give a lot of it to my mom, she has been an amazing supporter and willing to help any chance she can.
Has it been a smooth road?
As a stylist, there’s always someone who wants their hair done and there’s is a lot of time and sacrifice put into the craft that most people don’t realize. As a young entrepreneur, I realize that if I’m going to be successful I have to be willing to sacrifice but it will all be worthwhile in the end, I just have to stay laser-focused. Also, at one point in time business was slow, that’s where I began to doubt my abilities and second guess if this career was even for me. Then I began to think about those who expect me to be successful and how painful it would be to let them down. Once that passed, I began to see that I have to continue for myself and to make myself proud. I developed a saying that I repeat to myself whenever I don’t want to do something, I may be tired, or another obstacle has come up… “Get it by any means necessary, if not someone else will.”
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the JazzedUp story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a stylist who now specializes in braids. I do all kinds of braids, box braids, triangle, tribal braids, cornrows, Senegalese twist, etc. I been recently booking a lot of Knotless braids, so I guess you can say those are my specialty. I’m just most proud of the progress I’ve made and the patience I have developed. Seriously braiding taught me it takes time to create a masterpiece and as long as I remain patient and consistent everything shall fall into place. Jazzing people up is what I do, any idea they have, any style they want, my goal is to deliver. I have a genuine love for transforming my clients and I hope to share that.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
My goal for the next year is to educate myself in everything hair and what it takes to become a versatile stylist. I’m doing this at the one and only Paul Mitchell the school of Atlanta. The next three years, I see myself somewhere in a booth working on opening a shop of my own. The next 5-10 years I shall have my own shop and working on franchising my business. Each goal I knock out down I plan to continue to think about what’s next, constantly thinking about my next move and what I can do to escalate.
