Meet Jasmyne Brooks of Mixy Chix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmyne Brooks.

Jasmyne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m 25 and I was born and raised in Detroit, MI. I relocated to Atlanta, October 2014. I decided to move because I wanted to be exposed to better opportunities. I started my business in May of 2017. I was working for Verizon Wireless at their call center and everyday would sit in my cubicle thinking of how I wanted a way out and wanted to work for myself. As a teen, I always wanted to be an entrepreneur but I didn’t want to do just anything, I really wanted to discover what I was passionate about. I then came up with the idea of mobile bartending. Over the years of living in Atlanta, I noticed how there’s always something to do and there is always an event going on. Therefore, I wanted to offer a service that people felt wasn’t an option, something that their event had to have. Mixy Chix is a mobile bartending company who specializes in offering each client with signature cocktails to tailor to their event’s theme.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting my business has not been smooth but I know that with being an entrepreneur nothing comes easy and I’m up for the challenge. When I launched my business in May 2017, I started out making drinks to go, which were signature drinks that I created and I would package them in plastic sealed bottles and go to salons and different businesses in Atlanta to sell them. Some places would turn me down and I wasn’t getting booked for any bartending gigs so, I started to become discouraged. I lost focus of my business and steered away from it for a while. One day, I went to get my eyebrows done by my esthetician and she mentioned that she was having an anniversary party for being in business for 3 years and she wanted me to bartend. That motivated me to get back focused on my business and this time not give up. October 2017 is what I would call the rebirth of my business. I started getting inquiries about event bookings and would have people in my apartment complex try my drinks and everyone loved them. I started promoting my business on social media. I got business cards made and searched for networking events to attend to help get my name out there.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is a mobile bartending company who provides bartending services at private and public events. I am a certified bartender and currently the only employee of my business. For each event, I curate a few specialty cocktails that tailors to the client’s event. I take into consideration if they want their drinks to be of a certain color, the taste they want to acquire and any other special requests. I want my client’s to feel special and know that I take pride in making sure I provide an impeccable experience. I also make customized liquor bottles that are covered in glitter to add a more unique touch to any special occasion.

I am most proud of not giving up. Running a business is most certainly not easy but it’s worth it when you’re doing something that you love. I love being able to be that addition to the event that plays a role in keeping the guests entertained. Hearing that the client’s and guests actually love my drinks makes it that much more worth it.

In college, I majored in Marketing, I haven’t graduated but now that, I have my business, I’ve been able to apply what I did learn. I stay a step ahead of others because I think outside the box. I don’t wait for the client’s to find me. I get out and find them. I leave business cards in liquor stores. I pass them out at salons, malls, gas stations, work, networking events and everywhere else that I go. I also host Sip & Shops (pop up shops with other small business vendors) to help promote my brand and get exposure. I am big on advertising so any opportunity to help my business stand out, I act on it.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I’ve always been outspoken but not necessarily outgoing or personable. When I was younger, I would always find ways to make extra money before I was of age to get a job. I would babysit, braid hair, make CDs, anything I could do to make a few bucks I did. I always had the independent mindset, which I learned from my mom. I’ve always been a nice, giving person. As I got older, I knew I had to become more personable if I wanted to run a successful business so overtime, my personality has changed.
