Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Smith.
Jason, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a 3rd generation photographer. My grandfather was a Marine combat photographer in the Korean War. My father, David Smith, started Smith’s Studio located in Stone Mountain in 1971. He and my mother we’re very well-known portrait photographers in the Atlanta operating out of our studio located in historic Stone Mountain Village area and many families still to this day display our work. My parents retired in 2012 and I took over the family business and now operating almost all of the business and portrait work on location. I still do some studio work from time to time at my Loganville studio/camera room.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since we are an established name in the Atlanta community, things have been pretty smooth. The only struggle I’m facing now is “the digital camera and cellphones”. People these days are just not in tune with owning a fine portrait made by Smith Portrait Design. It takes many years of experience and education for a true portrait artist. Digital cameras are cheap and there has been a major influx of new start up photographers that are uneducated and have no experience. The end result of that is what sets my company apart. The other struggle is everyone captures images on their phones and posts to social media. A portrait on the wall is an heirloom and a treasure.
Smith Portrait Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our business is well known and having a portrait hanging in your home created by Smith Portrait Design is something that will be treasured forever. Passed down from one generation to the next. Education and experience is key in any business, especially in fine photography. Our specialty is fine portraiture of families and children. We are primarily a location studio, where we come to the client’s home or favorite location. I’m proud to say we offer portraits that are creative, distinctive and unique. Our work has that “touch of life” look that cannot be replicated. The effort to provide our valued clients with the highest quality work and craftsmanship is one that has earned us a reputation as a portrait photography studio with customer satisfaction from start to finish.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The fact that I can carry on the Smith family name as a portrait artist and photographer. Being taught by the one of best in the industry and the fact it was my father is my proudest moment.
