Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasper Alford.
Jasper, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At first, I never thought to become a DJ was something I wanted to do, but I moved into the city and started going to parties and started meeting DJs and getting inspired. Then, a few years later, I meet a great DJ/Producer by the name of EVK95 (Evan). He taught me so little by saying so less. He would never show anyone directly how to do things you just have to watch and pay attention, but he will answer questions if you really need it. So one day, I woke up and decided to practice on the equipment because we were roommates and ALL of the DJ equipment was there that needed like the controller, the laptop, and the speakers. It was like it was meant for me to pick up a new hobby because that’s what it started off for me. Then, people would come over every day and I’ll just be practicing for them and everyone was enjoying it. After a few months went by of me just playing music in the house for people, I went to NY came back and I saw my name on a flyer to DJ and I was nervous and excited at the same time. After everyone kept telling me how great it was, everyone was dancing and etc., that’s when I came up with the name DJ DropDatAss. After I wasn’t getting booked, I started making 1hr live mixes on SoundCloud “Study Break” “Emotional Twerkers” and etc. Now, I’m apart of a DJ group called Spice Boyz.” I’m getting booked more and I’m making better mixes.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, it hasn’t been a smooth path for me. Being a DJ is not easy if you don’t have the money to fully invest in yourself. Equipment is expensive, just about everything you need is 1k+ each item, but if you make friends with DJs and actually practice and take it seriously, a lot of DJs will support you, if you need it. I still deal with a lot when it comes to DJing like getting booked, making a perfect mix none edited, getting equipment, and working a 9-5.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I do a lot more than just DJing, I also do photography, fashion design, event coordinator, stylist, and graphic design. But DJing is my main focus at the moment. I tend to drop a pick up a hobby then turn it into a passion/career a lot, so this is where I’m at right now. What set me aside then others is the way I present myself when I’m on stage DJing. I’m not just playing music, I’m with the crowd every transition have to be perfect so the dancing doesn’t stop unless they need some water. The music I play is radio hits from 1990s-2010s. Sometimes, it’s emotional music but I’m always playing something mixed in for the people who still want to twerk or turn up because everyone in the crowd is important.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Everything is 50/50, sometimes I take a W, sometimes I take an L. The only bad luck I would say is not being able to fully get what I need, not getting booked every week, not expanded my DJing to big clubs and etc.
