Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaszy Shavers.
Jaszy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always known music is my purpose. Sometimes I look at my old photos barely able to reach the mic when I need a bit of motivation. Although I sang and played the piano since childhood, my musical journey didn’t really jumpstart until moving to the Southside of Atlanta. It’s great being a singer, songwriter, engineer, and producer but collaborating with other local creatives really helped evolve my brand. Once I got my own spot closer to the city, I renovated my second bedroom into a fully furnished home studio. Like clockwork God blessed me with two teams/bands to perform and create with. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been blessed to still book private gigs, and virtual concerts, design my own merchandise, sell DJ drops and original beats, partner with incredible artists, and release two self-written/produced/engineered singles.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The come-up was definitely a fight. Packing up my life in Carolina and adjusting to Atlanta was one of the hardest parts. I came from seeing my mom every day to once every several months, being surrounded by people I knew my whole life to just my siblings, driving 15/20min to lounge the beach to bumper-to-bumper traffic in the city. I struggled for a while to connect with new people, find work and find myself.
Fortunately, my older and younger sister really stepped up the first year and a half to give me more love than I could ever ask for. This literally changed my life.
Please tell us about your work.
I am a one-stop shop. I do everything from writing the lyrics, performing the songs, recording and engineering the music, producing the beats, designing my graphics, advertising, booking gigs, networking, and designing my brand’s merchandise. However, I am known for my singing and modeling as these are the two crafts, I nurtured the most when I first moved to Atlanta.
I’m proud to be an Afro-Latin woman and just as proud of where I came from. In this stage of my life I am unapologetic and constantly repping what matters to me. The Lowcountry will always be my stomping ground as it blessed me with so much wisdom, love and class. Still Atlanta will likely be my home for a long time as the diversity I’ve encountered here is unmatched.
I think my old soul sets me apart. It seeps out of my music, my style, my conversation, my values and my life mission. I understand the importance of being marketable but see no need to be trendy.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would go all in. I would take piano lessons instead of playing by ear. I would go to college for music instead of Business or Mass Communication. I would hold-off on any serious dating and I would have moved to Atlanta sooner.
