Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaye Budd.
Jaye is the founder of The Alchemy Sky Foundation. ASF, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, brings the healing power of music to those who need it. Their partners include the V.A. and Covenant House. His mission is to leverage business leaders, health professionals, and music teachers to unleash the power of music in order to connect and heal people. His vision is to help create a world whereby obstacles to access and create music are decreased and the opportunities to engage and enjoy music are increased.
A successful businessman, he spent 13 years at Verizon Wireless from 2001 until 2014. During the “boom” phase of the wireless industry, he played an integral leadership role in both the sales and marketing teams. Starting in a time when most people did not have a mobile phone until the ubiquitous explosion that is wireless today, he led his teams through unprecedented growth.
Jaye also has an entrepreneurial facet starting and overseeing two real estate property management companies that own and manage a multitude of properties across multiple states. Seeing tenants as families is a poignant window into the mindset of a customer for where someone calls home is an integral component to a healthy quality of life.
An avid musician, he has recorded his own songs in multiple states including Vibe Asylum Studio in Honolulu and Sun Studio in Memphis. His songs speak to the power and resilience of the human spirit. The first single of his upcoming CD, All This Life, is titled, “It’s Too Early (To Be Too Late)” and is now available on iTunes and Amazon.
Jaye holds a B.A. in Economics and Anthropology from the University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. from Arizona State University.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
After spending 13 years at Verizon Wireless, it was a bumpy adjustment. I went from “Oh, you’re a director at Verizon Wireless.” to “What the heck is an Alchemy Sky?”
The name comes from the word Alchemy which is defined as “…a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination.” Sky is for the limitless power of music to connect and heal.
The challenge lies in the fact that if your name isn’t Kim Kardashian or Donald Trump, you have no social mindshare to speak of in the beginning. And if you don’t have any social mindshare, you don’t exist. It makes no difference how good your cause is. That has been a journey.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Alchemy Sky Foundation story. Tell us more about the business.
ASF is an Atlanta-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that brings the healing power of music to those who need it. We partner with organizations in the community along with a broad network of music and health professionals to create needs-based programs for our clients.
Examples of our programs include group music therapy for nursing-home Veterans, song creation and recording at At-risk/Trafficked Teen homeless shelters and drumming workshops for older adults.
In 2018 we will launch a group program working with Older Adults who are challenged with Parkinson’s disease. We are also working on a group program whereby we hire Military Veterans from the Music Industry to collaborate with Post-9/11 Veterans helping them through the creative process of recording an original song in a Veteran-owned music studio in Atlanta.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is the product of perseverance, passion, consistency, and work. It comes in small increments. To that end, the more meetings, calls and follow up’s I can muster, the more that luck will grow and take shape. I have found this generally to be true in life and in business.
Passion and perseverance are fuel to move your goals down the road. The more passion and perseverance that is manifested in small, daily increments, the farther I will go. The “luckier” I am.
The road is seldom straight but always forward.
