Today we’d like to introduce you to Je’Coria Gullatt.
Hi Je’Coria, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was a little girl, I’ve always had a passion for doing hair. It all started when my mom would take me to the African braid shop to get my hair braided. Every time I went, I would observe what they were doing and felt their technique as they maneuvered through my head. After about three or four trips to the shop, I had somewhat of the technique down pack. I asked my mom could she purchase me a doll head so I can practice more and I never sat in their chair ever again. I started braiding my own hair, to braiding my family’s hair, to my braiding friend’s hair & so on. Throughout my academic journey of middle school and high school, my friends and a few of my classmates was the only clientele I had. I was okay with that because I was perfecting my craft. When I graduated high school and went to college, I had a little more clientele but not enough to survive the “college life”. I kind of got discouraged and stopped doing hair and started applying for jobs. I would work the jobs where I went to college then come home for break and work a seasonal job.
I then realized that wasn’t for me, that was not what God put me on this earth to do. My Bestfriend would always say “I can’t wait until you take off with doing hair.” I transferred schools and came back home & started back braiding hair and promoting my work a little more and gaining more clientele. But my life changed completely about 3 or 4 years ago when Knotless braids came in style. I watched a video on how to do them and kept practicing on myself. It wasn’t until a very good friend of mine, Taria Johnson, booked me for that particular style. My life, in a good way, hasn’t been the same since. She is a school teacher and once they seen her hair my only clientele were teachers, then it was healthcare workers (nurses, doctors, techs), and the rest is history. I absolutely love what I do and I’m committed to providing my clients with impeccable long-lasting protective styles so they can feel and look their best.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I wouldn’t say smooth but definitely had its share of ups and down. As a hairstylist, you have your uptime and you have downtime. You may be booked completely this month, overbooked the next month, and barely booked the month after next. So that part is not a smooth sail at all. I learned that even on my bad days to keep promoting my business and staying consistent As far as support my parents, friends, and family is here with me every step of the way. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them and God!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
