Today we’d like to introduce you to Jemarcus Kilgore.
Jemarcus, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been acting for most of my life, for a long time the first thing on my resume was “Baby Jesus”. However, it wasn’t until I was 12 that I got serious about it. I told my parents that I wanted to be the Red Ranger, then my mom told me that the Red Ranger was just an actor, that was close enough for me. That same year I booked a featured role in Tyler Perry’s “The Single Moms Club”. Now me being a 12 year old, I thought being in a real movie meant that my career was going to skyrocket from there on. However, that wasn’t the case. For the next four years, the only things I participated in were small church productions. Until August of 2016, when I auditioned for “The Little Mermaid” at a local community theatre.
I got cast as Prince Eric exposing me to another side of acting. At the end of our very last show, a little girl came up to me and tugged on my costume. She looked up at me and said, “Hi Prince Eric, when I came here I was sad. Then you started singing and it made me happy! Can I have your autograph?” The autograph didn’t matter me, what mattered was that I had used my talents to make someone’s life a little bit better. Now, of course, I gave her an autograph, but I also decided then and there that I didn’t want to act for my own benefit anymore. Now, I act in the hope that someone will walk into the theatre, or into the movies, or even turn on their TV, and when those moments are over, they’ll leave feeling a little bit better. Since then I’ve been blessed to be in “Discarded Things (formerly Just Grace)” (dir. Karen Abercrombie and Tara Lynn Marcelle) a feature film that will be coming to theatres soon. Many other stage productions, as well as short films. I’m thankful for the opportunities I’ve had, not only because they’ve been fun, but because of chances I’ve had to hopefully lives and do my part in making the world a better place.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been many times where I’ve gone into auditions and never got a callback. It can be hard to not get discouraged. There have been times when I thought acting wasn’t something that I was meant to do.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
While I’m primarily an actor, I also plan to direct, write, and compose the music for my own productions. I feel like my love for the industry as a whole will set me apart in the future.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In The next decade the industry has so much room to grow, from technology, to the amazing writers and directors, the possibilities are limitless, and I’m just happy to be one of the people who’s blessed enough to work in this industry
