Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Joyner.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started five & two company in 2010 after searching for a perfect work/life balance. I had a 12-year career in retail account management, but with the birth of my daughters, I didn’t have the desire to travel as much and felt I needed to find a better fit for my family and myself.
At that time, social media for business was starting to become a “thing”. I used my business communication skills and a knack for technology to tap into social media communication craze. I found the perfect nitch of small, local business owners who knew they needed and wanted to be on social media but were too busy with the day to day management of their businesses to keep up with it.
Over the past ten years, the flexibility of being my own boss has allowed me to grow my business to a comfortable level while still being present for my daughters and husband.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There was a lot of soul searching before I embarked on starting my own business. It began with being downsized from a company that I loved to panicking and taking a job with a company that was not a good environment for me. I ended up being let go from that company, which now I am so grateful for because it taught me exactly what sort of situation I didn’t want to be in.
The hardest thing for me as a women business owner was being able to validate how much I am worth. I had to find the courage to ask people to invest in me to help them grow their business. I am proud to say that I have been able to grow my business through word of mouth. Knowing I have impressed clients enough for them to recommend me to other business owners has been very rewarding.
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I named my business five and two company after the ages of my daughters at the time when I launched. I specialize in social media management but have also spilled over into website design, email marketing, content management, video creation, graphic/asset design, and even some local farmers market management. I truly enjoy finding a unique brand voice for each of my clients and work to stay on top of the social media trends, the newest apps, and creative ways to promote my clients.
I am a true collaborator and work seamlessly with public relations teams and marketing departments. I enjoy networking and connecting folks with others who may help them achieve their goals.
It’s hard to pick one moment to be the proudest of because, on any given day, a client might get reposted or tagged by a celebrity or featured in a local news story. Serving my community and helping local businesses has definitely given me a reason to smile.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is being happy in your daily routine. It took me a while to find the right number of clients that work for me and to feel comfortable with declining requests for work. But I know if I tip the scales too much, I’ll fall out of balance.
